YW custodians are responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of multiple YW facilities and workspaces. YW Facilities are multipurpose and include administrative offices and meeting rooms, childcare, housing suites, classrooms, rental spaces and fitness facility. As a member of a dynamic team, custodians uphold standards and expectations to ensure a welcoming, clean and orderly environment for YW employees, clients, tenants, members and our community. This role requires knowledge of, and adherence to, YW policies and procedures and Occupational Health and Safety standards.

This physically demanding position involves standing for long periods, frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs), repetitive tasks, and regular bending and rotation. The role operates primarily during daytime hours (6:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.) on a rotating 5-day schedule including some weekends, with the flexibility to cover shifts between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., seven days a week in emergencies, and may require working at multiple sites and varying shifts.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Ensure overall cleanliness of all work areas, common areas, bathrooms, lounges, kitchens, and service areas of all YW facilities.

  • Cleaning, maintaining and operating equipment such as Kaivac machines, floor cleaning equipment and carpet cleaners.

  • Conduct special cleaning projects or assist with special events when required.

  • Collect garbage and recycling and follow proper disposal procedures.

  • Change out shower curtains and window curtains.

  • Complete regular dusting, vacuuming, and laundry tasks; clean and sanitize resident rooms when their stay at YW ends.

  • Proactively notify team on areas or equipment that require attention and maintenance.

  • Ensure that all safety standards are met.

  • Attend employee team meetings and training sessions as required.

  • Assist with any additional duties and task as required or assigned.

  • Foster and contribute to a culture of inclusion and equity in a diverse work environment; understand and recognize that individual differences significantly contribute to YW Calgary's success.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to positively contribute to the team and work collaboratively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively speak, read and write in English.
  • Takes initiative, demonstrates adaptability, and responds well to change in a dynamic work environment.
  • Capable of the following activities for extended periods of time:
    o Daily wet mopping and sweeping.
    o Room cleaning and bed making.
    o Cleaning and wiping horizontal, low- and high-level surfaces.
    o Moving large laundry and cleaning carts.
    o Lifting, moving and folding large quantities of laundry.
    o Reaching above shoulders.
    o Lifting above shoulders to dispose of garbage/recycling.
  • Experience maintaining and operating cleaning equipment (e.g., carpet cleaner, floor scrubber, Kaivac machine, and vacuum cleaners).
  • Strong knowledge of the safe use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft 360 applications.
  • Current CPR & First Aid certification and WHMIS certifications.
  • Class 5 drivers license.
