This summer student opportunity is available within the Good Shepherd- Barrett Centre


About the Role:

The Barrett Centre provides crisis intervention supports to all those aged 16+ of any gender identity. The program provides services including 16 short-term respite beds, in-person and telephone support, information and referral; crisis assessment, counseling and support; symptom stabilization for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. All services are supported by a diverse team of staff including Peer Support, Harm Reduction, and various community partners in addition to the Mental Health Crisis Workers. Barrett Centre is committed to the promotion of Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression and Harm Reduction based practices in all the services provided.


How You Will Make an Impact:

  • Conduct risk and suicide assessments in a compassionate, hospitable, and non-judgmental manner
  • Provide immediate crisis intervention and utilize de-escalation strategies
  • Offer crisis counseling and one-on-one emotional support
  • Facilitate appropriate linkages to services and make referrals to community resources
  • Advocate on behalf of clients to ensure access to needed supports
  • Collaborate and coordinate care with other service providers
  • Deliver all services via the 24-hour Crisis Phone Line

What You'll Bring to Our Team

  • Post Secondary education or working towards Post Secondary education in Social Services, Crisis Management, Addictions etc.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of child/youth development
  • Excellent communication, team building, negotiating and problem-solving skills
  • Fluency in French and/or a language in addition to English is an asset
  • CPR Training or willingness to be certified is an asset.
  • Hospitable in dealings with clients/public / volunteers / staff, and other key stakeholders.
  • Available and responsive to the needs of others, demonstrating a respectful and compassionate demeanor
  • Observe all Good Shepherd health and safety rules.

Hiring Criteria - the following criteria is established by Canada Summer Job:

This temporary full-time position is funded by Service Canada for youth between the ages of 15 to 30 years of age.

  • Applicants may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as they were 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • As per the Summer Canada Jobs Program criteria:
    • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
    • Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
