About the Role
The Technical Writer is responsible for creating and maintaining high-quality documentation related to the design, operation, and safety of OEM equipment, accessories and custom test facilities. The ideal candidate will bridge communication between engineers, safety professionals, and technical teams to produce clear, compliant, and user-friendly documentation.
Position Details
Status: Full-Time
Location: Calgary, AB.
Shift: Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain technical documents, including equipment specifications, test protocols, commissioning documentation, and user manuals.
- Collaborate with the Special Projects Group to document the operation and maintenance of custom-built OEM equipment, accessories, and testing facilities.
- Interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and prototype designs to create accurate and clear documentation.
- Work with safety advisors to ensure documentation meets regulatory standards (e.g., OH&S, OSHA, ANSI, ISO) and company safety requirements.
- Create visual aids such as diagrams, flowcharts, and schematics to support written content.
- Conduct interviews and gather input from subject matter experts (SMEs), engineers, and technical personnel.
- Participate in equipment reviews, safety validation meetings, and project kick-off meetings to ensure thorough documentation coverage.
- Review and edit documentation from other departments to ensure consistency and technical accuracy.
Required Abilities, Knowledge, Experience
- Bachelor's degree specializing in English or Communications, or Technical Writing Certificate or Diploma.
- 3+ years of experience in technical writing, preferably in a manufacturing, engineering, or safety-focused environment.
- Familiarity with OEM equipment, industrial machinery, or custom-built test systems is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of safety standards and compliance documentation.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and documentation tools such as MadCap Flare, Confluence, or similar.
- Experience using SharePoint to manage and organize project documentation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to understand and translate technical concepts for diverse audiences.
- Comfortable working in active shop floor or laboratory environments when necessary.
- Experience working in cross-functional teams including safety, engineering, and R&D.
- Proficient in using SolidWorks to create custom visualizations for technical documentation.
- Skilled in interpreting and understanding technical drawings and schematics.
