We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Tax Manager to manage tax planning, compliance, reporting, and strategy for our growing portfolio of residential and commercial development projects. This role plays a crucial part in optimizing financial performance and ensuring full compliance with all tax-related regulations and legislation.
Key Responsibilities
Corporate Tax Structuring & Compliance
Lead the corporate tax structuring for various entities within the portfolio, ensuring optimal tax planning and compliance
Manage tax filings for corporate income tax, HST/GST, and other applicable taxes in compliance with federal, provincial, and local tax laws.
Oversee and manage the preparation and filing of tax returns, ensuring that all deadlines are met.
Review and analyze financial statements to ensure compliance with tax regulations and identify opportunities for tax efficiency.
Manage external relationships with tax advisors, tax authorities, legal teams, and other relevant stakeholders
Tax Planning & Mitigation
Develop and implement effective tax strategies to optimize the financial outcomes of residential and commercial development activities.
Stay current on tax legislation, regulatory changes, and relevant policies affecting real estate development to ensure accurate application and compliance.
Identify potential tax risks associated with projects and proactively implement measures to mitigate these risks.
Assist with corporate tax structuring for various entities within the portfolio, ensuring optimal tax planning and compliance.
Advise on tax-efficient structures for real estate transactions, investments, acquisitions, and dispositions, joint ventures, and other strategic initiatives.
HST/GST Filings and Compliance:
Oversee HST/GST filings for the company, ensuring accurate reporting and timely submissions on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
Address HST/GST-related queries and audits, working closely with external advisors and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
Act as the primary liaison with external auditors and tax authorities, handling inquiries, audits, and disputes effectively and professionally.
Leadership & Team Development:
Lead training initiatives to keep the finance and tax teams informed on emerging tax policies, industry trends, and management best practices
Foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture by encouraging continuous learning and knowledge sharing
Support the recruitment, onboarding, and retention of top tax talent to build a strong and capable team as the department grows further
Tax Reporting and Documentation:
Prepare and review the tax provisions for financial reporting, ensuring accurate reporting in accordance with relevant accounting standards (Canadian GAAP).
Ensure all tax documentation, including supporting schedules and reports, are accurate, organized, and prepared in a timely manner.
Implement best practices for record keeping and documentation to support audits and tax filings.
Provide regular reports to senior management on tax matters, including effective tax rates, tax risks, and opportunities for improvement.
Work closely with the finance, legal, and development teams to ensure cohesive financial planning and reporting across all projects.
Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA designation required.
Minimum 5 years' experience in public accounting, ideally within a real estate development or property management environment. Experience in corporate tax planning, HST/GST compliance, and tax reporting is essential.
Strong knowledge of Canadian tax regulations, including corporate income tax, HST/GST, and real estate tax issues.
Demonstrated experience in tax planning strategies, financial analysis, and risk assessment.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Effectively manage ad hoc tasks as they arise, ensuring deadlines are met without compromising quality.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of clearly conveying complex tax issues to various stakeholders.
Proficiency in accounting and tax software systems. Preferably QuickBooks.
