ABOUT US

The Catholic Centre for immigrants (CCI) has been serving refugees and immigrants for more than 65 years. CCI is a bridge between the 7,000 immigrants and refugees who come to Ottawa each year and the community. We provide programs and services to help newcomers settle and integrate. We also work in the community to promote the value of a diverse and more welcoming community for all.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Manager of Settlement Programs and Services, the Housing Support Worker is responsible to assist clients to obtain/maintain suitable housing, and to avoid homelessness when they are at risk of housing loss.

This position reports to: Settlement Manager
Employment status: Part Time- Contract – March 31, 2025
Hourly rate: $28.66

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide housing case management, needs assessment, supportive counselling, crisis intervention and information and referral services.
  • Provide short term assistance and/or refer clients to appropriate community services, to prevent housing loss and/or to promote long-term housing retention and stability.
  • Provide families with assistance to find and secure permanent housing, and to provide follow-up support, including home visits (as needed).
  • Provide advocacy and mediation support, assist with information and orientation regarding housing rights and responsibilities as well as group workshops.
  • Assist clients to establish links with appropriate resources including services relating to financial assistance, shelter supports, housing supports, legal referrals, and any community supports that may be available to clients, to assist and promote housing stability.
  • Assist as needed with the On-site Food Pantry support program.
  • Keep administrative records of services and activities, input data into agency/program specific databases, including OCMS, HIFIS, as well as complete monthly narrative reports.
  • Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

(Education, Knowledge, Experience, Skills)

The Housing Support Worker understands and supports CCI's mission and has knowledge in housing services, community and financial supports available in the city of Ottawa. This position requires strong communications and interpersonal skills, excellent organizational abilities and exceptional cultural competency. The Housing Support Worker must be a self-starter with initiative who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.

  • Post secondary education in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Cross-cultural competence and ability to outreach to newcomer communities.
  • Ability to facilitate workshops and group sessions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to deal with confidential material and matters.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to function in a multidisciplinary, culturally diverse workplace.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in French is a strong asset.
  • Proficiency with personal computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with professional office systems and procedures.
