The Systems Administrator is responsible for planning, implementing, configuring, and maintaining corporate computer systems and applications. Aside from managing the virtual and physical IT infrastructure, the Systems Administrator will supervise the corporate helpdesk and technical support staff. The Systems Administrator will provide subject matter expertise to County departments to determine their technology needs, provide recommendations on products and services, and lead in the execution, design, and implementation of these technologies. This position will be supported by an IT Support Technician.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Administer, install, configure, update, and maintain all computer systems, segments, and related IT infrastructure, platforms, applications and services in a Windows desktop and server environment.
  • Supervises technical support staff and the overall development and day-to-day operations of the IT Helpdesk.
  • Provides application configuration, administration, and maintenance support to all enterprise systems (e.g. PSD City Wide Budgeting and Assets, GHD Web Services, FileHold, Info:HR, Sage 300, Moodle); functions as subject matter expert on issues regarding performance, reliability, functionality and business process integration.
  • Plan, execute, and supervise core service, operating system and major hardware upgrades, patches and projects from conception to completion.
  • Develops, monitors, maintains and tests disaster recovery plans, including regular backup processes and operations for data protection and failover.
  • Communicates with service providers, vendors, and contractors in the resolution of complex issues, quoting and purchasing equipment, and assists the Manager of Technology Services with the administration of vendor contracts.
  • Manage small to large-scale technology-based projects with business units using project management best practices.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and leadership to County departments to determine their technology needs, provide recommendations on products and services and lead and support the acquisition, design, development and implementation of those technologies.
  • Review, identify, recommend and implement improvements to processes and procedures, existing business systems and applications and the IT infrastructure to enhance the efficiency of IT operations.
  • In collaboration with the Network Administrator, ensure cyber security and privileged account management practices are implemented and followed.
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, computer systems, or a related diploma program specializing in systems administration is required.
  • Certifications in relevant areas considered an asset: CompTIA Server+, Security+, A+, Microsoft 365 Administrator, MCSE, Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), or other similar industry-recognized certification.
  • Minimum five years of practical experience in systems administration and support in a Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Extensive experience deploying and managing physical and virtual infrastructure, cloud computing, networking and storage concepts, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning.
  • Considerable knowledge and hands-on working experience with infrastructure and cloud systems, including (but not limited to):
    • Windows Server (Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, DFS, file and print services)
    • Virtualized environments (Hyper-V, Citrix)
    • Operating system and application deployment, patching and updating (PDQ Deploy, WSUS, GPO, WDS)
    • Microsoft Cloud (Azure, M365, EntraID)
    • Enterprise storage (SAN and NAS) and backup systems (Veeam)
    • Productivity and collaboration (Microsoft Office, Teams, Zoom)
    • Endpoint protection (SOPHOS)
    • Email (Microsoft Exchange)
    • Database Management System (Microsoft SQL)
    • GIS systems (ArcGIS, Geocortex)
  • Experience with client operating systems including Windows, Linux, Mac iOS, and Android.
  • Strong knowledge of IP based networking and cybersecurity concepts
  • Advanced knowledge of computing hardware including computers, tablets, smartphones, VoIP phones, printers and other common peripherals.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills, with a high level of resourcefulness.
  • High level of interpersonal, communication, and team/customer relations skills.
  • High degree of precision and accuracy in documentation and investigative procedures.
  • Adaptability to frequent technological changes and ability to learn, demonstrate, and teach new software and hardware processes to users.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment and unsupervised.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, meet deadlines and deal with interruptions.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class ‘G' Driver's Licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
Shift:Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (35 hours per week) with occasional evening and weekend work, when required.
Salary Range:$82,609.80 - $96,623.80 (based on Perth County's 2024 salary grid).
