About Us

Purpose

As member of the Smart Prosperity Institute's Communications team, the Communications Specialist supports efforts that promote the research expertise and policy insights of the research network and policy shop. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Specialist coordinates the production and dissemination of various communications products, fostering the effective promotion of SPI's thought leadership and knowledge to key audiences and stakeholders.

What You'll Do

Project Coordination

  • Working closely with SPI's senior/research associates and program directors, the Specialist leads the coordination of all communications deliverables for projects and is the liaison between funders' and partners' communications staff to ensure amplification of project outcomes.
  • Produce communications plans for SPI's Research and Land-use, Agriculture and Nature (LUNA) teams, including key messages, target audiences, and communications deliverables;
  • Develop project timelines and key performance indicators during proposal development or project initiation;
  • Coordinate the production and dissemination of project deliverables using SPI's project management tool;
  • Liaise with Shared Services and external consultants to ensure brand and
    style consistency;
  • Liaise with Shared Services' Web/IT Coordinator to publish project-based content on SPI's website;
  • Act as the guardian of accurate funder and partner representation across project materials, ensuring consistency in acknowledgements;
  • Produce metric reports in collaboration with the Communications Officer and share with project funders and partners.

Writing and Editing

  • Create and execute the content strategy for SPI's new website in collaboration with the Director of Communications;
  • Track and implement improvements to website content continually;
  • Coordinate the production and promotion of report summaries and/or policy briefs for all SPI publications;
  • Write promotional content for project deliverables;
  • Liaise with Shared Services' designers to create shareable kits for funders and partners;
  • Support the Senior Manager in writing and editing SPI outreach activities, including policy briefs;
  • Produce and distribute the Research Network Update newsletter and one-off newsletters for special events;
  • As needed, act as a backup editor for any project-related or SPI outreach content.

Communications Planning and Execution

  • Provide feedback and insights to Director of Communications on SPI's Communications Strategy and policy insights related to environment/economy.
  • Assist in developing processes/guidelines with new project management tool; champion tool's adoption.
  • Review/approve SPI website content updates.
  • Support Senior Manager in highlighting communications successes to internal audiences.
  • Aid Senior Manager in writing/editing SPI newsletters, blog posts, and new content types; develop materials for SPI thought leaders.

Media and Social Media

  • Support Senior Manager by writing/editing SPI content, implementing social media/PR best practices, and developing media lists.
  • Collaborate with designers to create shareable kits and draft content for funder projects.
  • Create social media calendars for funder projects.

Other Duties

  • Conduct ongoing market research into social media and media relations in collaboration with the Communications Officer.
  • Perform additional tasks directed by supervisor to contribute to team objectives.
  • Collaborate with communications colleagues across the partnership as required.
  • Manage SPI's info@ account and support development/delivery of training webinars.
  • Provide backup support for other Communications Team members, as necessary.

Who You Are

Essential Qualifications

  1. Minimum five years of demonstrated experience in a similar role.
  2. Strong project management skills, exceptional writing and editing abilities, and strategic communications thinking skills normally acquired through postsecondary studies in a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and work experience;
  3. Knowledge of environment and economic policy an asset;
  4. Knowledge of post-secondary or non-profit communications an asset
