Who we are: Tropicana Community Services, a Toronto-based multi-service organization, provides all youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage and others in need with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices. Our mission is achieved through culturally appropriate programs such as counselling, childcare, educational, and employment services and youth development.

Who we look for: Reporting to the Controller, the successful candidate is responsible for assisting the finance department with several aspects, including providing analysis of budget expenditures to meet the organization's operational and contractual requirements, along with donor compliance requirements.

What you will do:

  • Participate in the preparation and review of the financial aspects of proposals and contracts, developing and reviewing budgets
  • Create and maintain project accounts in the accounting system from contract signing through contract close-out
  • Communicate with project managers regarding contract budgets, expenditures and project variances on an ongoing basis,
  • Perform various account reconciliations and month-end accounting processes
  • Monitor variances, track receivables and follow up on discrepancies
  • Maintain the confidentiality of financial information, investment decisions, or any other tasks assigned by the organization
  • Analyze financial performance and develop forecast models
  • Perform budget and cost analysis, reviewing and advisory financial statues
  • Create, send and follow up on invoices
  • Assist in the preparation of spreadsheets, reports and correspondences as required
  • Adhere to the organization's policies and procedures

What you will need:

  • Secondary or post-secondary education; (BA, BS, or Com degree program or related field with an accredited educational institution; students welcome)
  • Good Excel skills/knowledge of accounting concepts
  • Satisfactory analytical, data gathering and IT skills
  • A self-starter who is results-oriented self-motivated and organized
  • Ability to maintain detailed fiscal records and files
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong Critical thinking and problem-solving skills

To be qualified for this position under the Canada Summer Jobs Program, you must also:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.

**International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
