Job Title: Controller
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Position Overview:
Our client is looking for an experienced Controller to oversee all aspects of financial management, including accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting. The Controller will play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the financial data while providing strategic insights to support decision-making processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP standards. Present financial reports to senior management, highlighting key performance metrics and variances.
- Develop and monitor the company's budget and forecast, collaborating with department heads to ensure alignment with strategic objectives. Evaluate financial performance against budgetary targets and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Manage cash flow and liquidity by monitoring receivables, payables, and operating expenses. Implement effective cash management strategies to optimize working capital and minimize financial risk.
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger maintenance, and payroll processing. Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and internal controls.
- Conduct thorough financial analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and risks. Provide insights and recommendations to support decision-making processes, such as investment evaluations and capital expenditure decisions.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors to ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal tax regulations. Prepare and file tax returns accurately and timely, minimizing tax liabilities while maximizing available deductions.
- Facilitate external audits and reviews by coordinating with auditors, providing necessary documentation, and addressing inquiries. Implement audit recommendations to enhance internal controls and operational efficiency.
- Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning. Set clear performance expectations and provide guidance to support professional development goals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA designation preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management, preferably in the real estate industry.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP principles, financial analysis techniques, and tax regulations.
- Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems, such as QuickBooks, Yardi, or Oracle.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and communicate insights effectively.
- Proven leadership experience with the ability to motivate and develop a high-performing team.
- Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and time management abilities.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities with a positive attitude.
