This role will be dedicated to a large long term First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan's Principle Settlement.

On October 24, 2023, the Federal Court approved the Settlement Agreement for the First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan's Principle Class Action. The Settlement Agreement includes $23.34 billion in compensation for impacted First Nations individuals and some of their family members.

The Settlement applies to First Nations children who were removed from their homes by, or involving, child welfare agencies operating in First Nations communities and the Yukon and placed in out-of-home care between April 1, 1991, and March 31, 2022, and to First Nations children who experienced a delay, denial or gap in essential services between April 1, 1991, and November 2, 2017.

Castlemain's role in implementing the First Nations Child and Family Services Jordan's Principle Claims Navigator Program is to assist the Claims Administrator in providing navigational supports to Class Members in the Claims Process as outlined in the Settlement Agreement Schedule I, Framework for Supports for Claimants in Compensation Process in a culturally safe and trauma informed way. Our guiding objectives are to ensure that every Claimant has the opportunity to access, understand, and respond to the Settlement Agreement notice, as well as receive the necessary assistance for completing and submitting their claims. Furthermore, we are dedicated to ensuring that Claimants are well-informed about the wellness support and resources available to them.

Summary

Reporting to the Director, People Team for Castlemain, this role is responsible for the people related function of the First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan's Principle Settlement (the program) including the support of all people related policies, programs and practices. They will perform a variety of complex and confidential responsibilities, as well as offer thought leadership regarding organizational and people-related strategy and execution. This role provides hands-on and strategic input, insight, and advice on people-related issues including, but not limited to talent management, employee relations, recruitment, coaching/development, compensation, conflict management, organizational development, and training for a team that is growing rapidly.

Responsibilities

  • Building relationships across the organization in support of a comprehensive talent / people function.
  • Assisting in the design, roll out and implementation of policies, programs and practices to improve organizational and program efficiency, create an outstanding experience for our people and help align our people with the strategic goals of the company in the context of the First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan's Principle Settlement program.
  • Being the point of contact for our people and managers when it comes to supporting the people related function in areas such as, but not limited to, onboarding, performance management, compensation, training, culture and engagement.
  • Contributes to internal projects as required.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field, such as Human Resource Management, Business Administration, Commerce, Psychology, Industrial Relations and/or a related field.
  • Minimum of eight to ten years work experience in a Talent / People / HR role and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CPHR designation or CPHR candidate would be an asset.
  • Successful background / reference check.

Skills

  • Ability to prioritize and effectively deliver on a complex portfolio of work meeting deadlines and budgets, while ensuring high quality work.
  • Proven ability to deliver results working independently or within a team environment;
  • Competence in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations;
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in Indigenous issues in Canada, including Indigenous governance and community development;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action;
  • High degree of professionalism in representing the organization

Self-identifying as Indigenous and/or having first-hand knowledge or experience living in and/or working with an Indigenous community will be considered an asset.

This role could be located in Toronto, Winnipeg or Vancouver.

  • We employ a hybrid work model with the expectations that individuals attend their closest office if they are within a 45 km radius 3 days per week.
