  5. Education: Civil Structural Engineer University Degree
  • Good knowledge of construction methods and materials.
  • Ability to inspect existing buildings and to evaluate the building and/or structural systems.
  • Structural design. This responsibility ranges from small projects (house beams) to buildings, primarily industrial type.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to write technical reports on buildings in general.
  • Will be required to support our concrete rehabilitation projects in design and field work through southern Ontario.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Would be very beneficial to have good working knowledge of OBC Part 3.

STRUCTURAL/BUILDING RESTORATION ENGINEER
POSITION SUMMARY
The Structural/Building Restoration Engineer will be responsible for restoring the structural integrity, safety, and functionality of compromised buildings and structures. Leveraging expertise in structural engineering principles and materials science, the incumbent will assess damages, formulate restoration strategies, and oversee the execution of repair projects. This role will involve close collaboration with architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to ensure the successful completion of restoration initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct thorough inspections and assessments to identify root causes and extent of structural damage or deterioration.
Utilize structural analysis software and techniques to evaluate the stability, load-bearing capacity, and integrity of buildings/structures.
Develop detailed restoration plans and specifications outlining repair methodologies, material requirements, and construction techniques to restore structures.
Select appropriate materials and construction methods considering factors like structural needs, durability, aesthetics, and compatibility.
Prepare accurate cost estimates and budgets for restoration projects, accounting for materials, labor, equipment, and other expenses.
Ensure compliance with all applicable building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards.
Oversee restoration projects from start to finish, coordinating with contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders for timely and cost-effective delivery.
Implement quality control measures to verify restoration work meets specified standards.
Identify potential risks and hazards, and develop mitigation strategies to minimize safety issues and project delays.
Maintain detailed records, including inspection reports, design documents, and project documentation to track progress.
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, or related field; Master's preferred
Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility
Extensive experience in structural engineering focused on building restoration and rehabilitation
Proficient in using structural analysis software like SAP2000, ETABS, or STAAD.Pro
Strong knowledge of building codes, regulations, and industry standards related to structural engineering and construction
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and convey technical concepts
Project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation
Attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety standards
Adaptability to changing priorities and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working on historic preservation or architectural conservation projects
Knowledge of sustainable building practices and green restoration techniques
Familiarity with non-destructive testing for assessing structural integrity
Advanced certifications/training in structural engineering, building science, or related fields
