About the Role

The primary function of the Weekend Overnight Security Worker is to ensure the safety and security of the occupants in the Shelter Program. The position will also carry out light housekeeping and maintenance duties while on shift. This is an awake overnight position.

Responsibilities and Duties Include:

  • Ensure compliance with Fire Regulations/Emergency and agency overnight protocols and maintain high standards of hygiene, safety and security in the facility –manage fire alarms, assist clients to evacuate the building, conduct rounds of the house to ensure safety, ensures exits are clear and doors secured, identify any vandalism or criminal activity and monitor security cameras.
  • Documentation - Accurate documentation, incident reports, communication/fire/maintenance/over night log reports, etc.
  • Communication – Accurate communication of information at shift change with incoming staff, written and verbal communication, etc. with their shift partner (101 Ontario), the clients, management and external stakeholders such as police and Emergency Medical Services
  • Issue Management and Conflict Resolution – ability to identify, assess and manage issues such as interpersonal conflicts and respond and resolve them in a timely, effective and culturally appropriate manner
  • Crisis Intervention– provide crisis management related to various population issues using non punitive and de-escalation methods within a cross cultural and anti-racism approach
  • Work the Floor - ability to interact with clients outside the office and on the floor and to perform safety related shift responsibilities such as but not limited to room checks required by the Toronto Hostel Services
  • Housekeeping and Maintenance – sweeping, mopping, and minor maintenance activities.
  • Comply with agency Operational Policies – demonstrate ability to understand and comply with agency policies and procedures, Shelter Standards, professional work ethics and statutory regulations and Acts
  • Attend training, staff meetings, etc. as required
  • Other Duties - as required

Required Education & Required Competencies:

  • Minimum three years' experience in a security environment is preferred
  • Community college and/or training in Security program from a recognized institution is an asset
  • Current Ontario Private Security License required as per the Private and Investigative Services Act, 2005
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate required, WHMIS an asset
  • Punctual, self-directed and demonstrated ability to mediate in a firm and non-threatening manner
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in conflict mediation, de-escalation and crisis management form a non punitive, culturally sensitive and anti-racist approach
  • Developed analytical, assessment and excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding and experience with facility life safety and security systems
  • Well-developed team work and inter-personal skills, computer literacy in a Windows environment
  • Position requires physical abilities for stair climbing up to eight floors in the event of a fire alarm or emergency evacuation
  • Availability for overnight work required
  • Fluency in second language is an asset

Working Conditions

  • The position works out of the main floor office at the building entrance but is required to carry out building inspections both in the building and the exterior property during the overnight period.
  • The Weekend Overnight Security Worker normally works throughout the building and exterior property overnight and alone.
  • The position requires physical ability to lift up to 50lbs, moving, cleaning, and ability to climb stairs to eight (8) floors for scheduled room checks and in the event of a fire alarm or emergency evacuation.
  • The Weekend Overnight Security Worker will be communicating with the Overnight Shelter Worker and the Overnight Security staff from the satellite shelter at 250 Queen Street who is required to check in at 101 Ontario location at the beginning and at the end of their shift.
  • This is an awake position requiring that the worker is alert at all times during the shift.

Rate: $20.20/hour (2024 rate)

Hours: 16 hrs/week Friday and Saturday (overnight awake position)
