This summer student opportunity is with our Good Shepherd - Toronto (North York & Scarborough)

How You Will Make an Impact

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Social Services Worker will provide support to the staff and residents of our two group homes, located in North York and Scarborough. Responsibilities will include advocating for, empowering and assisting residents in maintaining their home and role in the community. This will be done through direct programming as needed by clients, i.e. life skills programming, daily living skills development, conflict resolution, crisis intervention and prevention, supportive counseling, advocacy, referrals, reducing social isolation, budgeting, community building, case management and educational and vocational community opportunities.

What You'll Bring to Our Team

  • Post-secondary education in social services, personal care, and/or life skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Availability, Flexibility, Adaptability, Hospitality and Dignity.
  • CPR/First Aid certification and WHMIS training.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt in a changing work environment.
  • Creativity and flexibility in achieving desired outcomes.
  • Hospitable in dealings with clients / public / volunteers / staff, and other key stakeholders.
  • Available and responsive to the needs of others.
  • Respectful, patient and compassionate demeanor.
  • Works well in a team setting and independently
  • Must provide a valid current Vulnerable Sector Police Check
  • Excellent communication, team-building, negotiating and problem-solving skills.

Hiring Criteria - the following criteria is established by Canada Summer Job:

This temporary full-time position is funded by Service Canada for youth between the ages of 15 to 30 years of age.

  • Applicants may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as they were 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
  • As per the Summer Canada Jobs Program criteria:

    • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
    • Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
