We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Chief Estimator to join our exciting organization! As a key member of our team, you will report directly to the Vice President of Construction as you lead the construction division's estimates, ensuring accurate and timely completion of all estimating tasks and projects. This position will coordinate with preconstruction and project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and develop comprehensive estimating strategies.

This position is based out of our head office in Kelowna, BC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the construction division's estimates throughout the budgeting stages, ensuring accurate and timely completion of all estimating tasks and projects.
  • Develop and implement efficient and effective estimating processes to ensure accuracy, consistency, and competitiveness.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, market conditions, and emerging technologies to inform strategic decision-making and maintain a competitive edge.
  • Coordinate with preconstruction and project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and develop comprehensive estimating strategies.
  • Studies and understands the contract documents of each project before and after estimating to determine areas, including provisions of the general or special conditions, that may be ambiguous or present problems or result in unforeseen costs –such matters should be brought to the attention of the Procurement Manager.
  • Investigates conditions at the job site prior to budget to understand and evaluated site accessibility, surface and underground conditions and any condition that would affect construction methods and costs.
  • Estimates each job accurately and reviews estimates with the Procurement Manager and Director of Construction in sufficient time to permit careful analysis, checking of calculations, and corrections as necessary
  • Prepare cost estimates for materials, labour, equipment, and other project expenses using various methods such as historical data, comparison metrics, industry standards, and current market rates.
  • Identify potential risks and uncertainties associated with projects and develop strategies to mitigate them in the estimation process.
  • Utilize estimating software, databases, and other technological tools to streamline the estimation process and enhance accuracy and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with finance and accounting teams to develop and manage project budgets, monitor expenses, and track cost variances throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Prepares Job Cost sheets for review and approval by the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), Development Manager, and Construction Team at the start of each project, monthly and at the time of completion.
  • Works with the Procurement Manager to prepare and maintain an up-to-date directory of material suppliers, qualified contractors and sub-contractors, and equipment rental rates by category
  • Establish and maintain relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors to secure competitive pricing and favorable terms.
  • Represent Traine at industry events to enhance brand visibility and network with potential partners.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications are preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in construction estimating, with an emphasis on wood frame, specifically with the following:
    • National Building Codes (building specifications)
    • Budgeting
    • Quantity surveys
    • Estimation of materials, labour, equipment, and sub-contractor work
    • Microsoft Excel, Blue Beam, Procore.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in construction estimating techniques and onscreen takeoff software. Strong mathematical and analytical skills are essential.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to diverse stakeholders.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to review and analyze large volumes of data and information.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions.
  • Proficiency in negotiation techniques and strategies, with the ability to negotiate favorable terms and conditions with vendors, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, with the ability to adjust priorities and strategies as needed to meet changing project requirements and deadlines.
