The Catholic Centre for immigrants (CCI) has been serving refugees and immigrants for more than 65 years. CCI is a bridge between the 7,000 immigrants and refugees who come to Ottawa each year and the community. We provide programs and services to help newcomers settle and integrate. We also work in the community to promote the value of a diverse and more welcoming community for all.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the CEC Employment Counsellor provides employment coaching services and support to newcomers on employment search, career planning and referrals; and will also establish and support community connections between newcomers and the community-at-large, and raise awareness of newcomers' community and employment needs.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct individual intake and needs assessment meetings with clients.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to newcomers, including internationally trained professionals, to support their job search, career development and settlement needs.
  • Assist clients as needed, with basic job search strategies, resume writing, interview preparation, networking skills, labour market information and other employment-focused activities.
  • Follow-up on client progress using case management approach and identify barriers to employment, to assess outcomes and to help ease access to services.
  • Facilitate employment workshops on labor market information, job search, networking skills and other employment-focused activities.
  • Contribute to development of workshops based on feedback from clients and own experience.
  • Update and maintain accurate service records, database systems and program documentation.
  • Prepare client testimonials and reports as requested.
  • Support planning of the program employment activities, including outreach strategies.
  • Organize outreach activities to clients, employers and community employment organizations, to promote program services and client's needs.
  • Participate in staff and team meetings and in outreach activities as required.
  • Organize and participate in events that promote social interaction between newcomers and members of the established community.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies for recruitment and support of program volunteers.
  • Work collaboratively with volunteers and staff to ensure efficient and effective services at CCI.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience providing employment-related services to internationally trained professionals or individuals experiencing career changes.
  • Experience supporting NEET and other clients, to become job ready
  • Experience facilitating groups and workshops.
  • Experience assessing client needs to provide appropriate community referrals and follow ups.
  • Understanding of basic human resources practices including resume development, interview techniques and job searches.
  • Familiarity with social services in Ottawa.
  • Familiarity with current labour market trends and employment opportunities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Good knowledge of Social Media and online platforms.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, culturally diverse team.
  • Proficiency in English is required. Fluency in French is highly desirable. Other languages an asset.
