Senior Accountant

The Senior Accountant will support Arbutus Properties with all aspects of day-to-day accounting activities including reconciliations and related reporting. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is eager to advance their accounting career in the real estate development industry with a dynamic and rapidly growing company. The successful candidate will be an integral part of the finance team based out of Vancouver, BC, reporting to the Director of Finance.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Corporate Accounting:

  • Ensure the timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements by successfully completing close procedures:
    • Review monthly reconciliations, such as bank reconciliations, GST returns, credit card reconciliations, and expense reports
    • Reconcile intercompany transactions and balances.
  • Review journal entries in an accurate and timely manner
  • Maintain and reconcile fixed asset schedules
  • Prepare draft financial statements for review
  • Identify and recommend ways to streamline day-to-day accounting operations and to make accounting processes more efficient and improve internal controls
  • Assist in the implementation of new accounting software and tools as needed
  • Assist in corporate financing and loan administration
  • Mentor and support junior staff
  • Provide ad-hoc accounting and project support as required

Project Accounting:

  • Own the day-to-day accounting for allocated projects including entering journal entries, invoices, preparing bank reconciliations and other monthly GL reconciliations
  • Review invoices, contracts, change orders, and purchase orders along with supporting documentation, and ensure all necessary approvals are met
  • Vendor payables management – support weekly cashflow planning by monitoring, prioritizing, and communicating invoices for payment
  • Prepare construction progress draw packages and budget variance analysis
  • Support the preparation of management reporting packages
  • Keep finance management team informed on project status including project timelines, actual vs budget, and project contingencies
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge and status of projects by liaising with project managers, preparing project job cost reports, monitoring budgets vs actual costs, staying up to date with project schedules, and understanding and communicating cash flow implications

Lease agreement maintenance and leasing team support:

  • Review lease agreements for compliance with financing terms
  • Review annual CPI increase calculations
  • Maintain codes in Yardi to align with lease agreement components
  • Reconcile monthly tenant rent deposits with rent roll
  • Review calculations and processing of tenant deposit refunds on move-outs

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in either a full-cycle accounting environment or a public practice accounting firm
  • CPA Designated or actively pursuing CPA Professional Designation
  • Real estate development and construction accounting experience preferred
  • Experience with Yardi Voyager 7 is preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter: ability to self-manage, prioritize and problem solve
  • Strong work ethic: ability to work hard, be hands-on and to help manage the team to meet deadlines
  • Must have supervision and coaching experience
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills; must be able to work with discretion and be trusted with confidential information
