Summary

Reporting to the Shop Foreman, the Cabinet Maker is responsible for tasks including but not limited to: operation of wood working machines including CNC nesting machine, doweling machine, case clamps, sliding table saws, jointers, planers, wide belt sanders and the use of hand tools to fabricate, shape, repair and construct wooden cabinets, doors and millwork. The successful candidate must be knowledgeable in all aspects of production, including the ability to read blueprints and specifications to be constructed, with an emphasis on quality and consistency.

When the workload dictates, this position may assist in cabinet finishing and other tasks as may be assigned such as surface preparation, applying stains, paints and topcoats to a variety of woods and veneers, colour matching, and using/maintaining the spray booth. The successful candidate will be responsible for knowing and practising safe working methods and have a strong knowledge of shop practices, procedures, techniques, tools, equipment, quality control and safety equipment. Dedication to quality craftsmanship is essential in this role.

Job Duties

  • Study plans, specifications or drawings of articles to be made
  • Operate millwork machinery and use hand tools to cut, shape and form parts and components
  • Trim joints and fit parts and subassemblies together to form complete unit and reinforce joints
  • Gathering elements of each cabinet and assembling the final product
  • Inspecting each item to ensure quality control and specifications
  • Repair or restyle cabinets and/or their elements
  • Ensuring appropriate care for finished products
  • Operate woodworking machines
  • Trims component parts of joints to ensure snug fit
  • Bore holes or insertion of screws or dowels
  • Sands and scrapes surfaces and joints to prepare for finishing
  • Receive materials and deliverables
  • May apply varnish, veneer, stain or polish to finished products
  • May apply primer, tinted lacquer, and lacquers
  • May apply stains by hand and by spraying
  • Sanding of materials between coats
  • Store all materials properly and safely
  • Gather specifications from samples, clients and/or the design team
  • Estimate and gather materials required for production
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment and forklift
  • Keep a daily log of tasks
  • Contribute and participate in the effective use of the Quality Control System
  • Understand and comply with all Policies and Procedures
  • Maintain a clean working area free from sawdust and debris between tasks and at end of day
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a similar role
  • Current and cleared Criminal Record Check is required
  • Cabinet Maker certification is an asset
  • Installation experience is an asset
  • Knowledge of spray equipment and spray booth operation and maintenance is an asset
  • Experience in wood staining, painting and finishing is an asset
  • Basic knowledge of carpentry is an asset
  • First Aid and CPR is an asset
  • Ability to operate required hand and power tools and equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Effective verbal and listening communications skills
  • Time management skills
  • Strong working mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Ability to readily determine the correct tools and equipment needed to do a job
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment

Work Conditions

  • Hours of work: 44 hours per week; Mon to Thurs 7:30am-5:00pm and Fri 7:30am-4:00pm. One 30-minute unpaid lunch break and two 15-minute breaks provided per shift. Hours of work are subject to seasonal changes and variations caused by workload or other circumstances

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust

  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination
