Position Overview

The Registered Massage Therapist provides RMT services to the students, staff, and faculty of Conestoga College, as well as other clients as requested. The RMT operates within the Wellness Office in the Rec Centre at Conestoga College's Doon Campus.

In carrying out the duties and responsibilities of this positiong, the Registered Massage Therapist must cultivate and maintain a diverse and inclusive environment in which the variety of clients' backgrounds, experiences, places of origin, racial/ethnic identities, sexual identities, gender, ages, and more are heard, respected, and valued.

A great deal of responsibility is exercised with final overview by the Wellness Coordinator. It is also important that the Registered Massage Therapist communicates consistently with the Wellness Coordinator to ensure that they are up to date on the basic overall operations of CSI's Wellness services and programming.

Duties and Responsibilities

Registered Massage Therapy

  • Administer client-focused RMT services to students, staff, and faculty of Conestoga College, as well as other clients as requested
  • Distribute and assess completed Health History Forms
  • Consult with clients about their medical histories and any problems with stress and/or pain in order to determine appropriate treatment
  • Evaluate clients' soft tissue condition, joint quality and function, muscle strength, and range of motion
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and materials, ordering and restocking as needed
  • Prepare for each appointment by cleaning the massage room, dressing the massage table with fresh linens, preparing/blending oils, and adjusting lighting and music
  • Massage and knead muscles and soft tissues in order to treat medical conditions, injuries, or wellness maintenance
  • Respond and adapt to client feedback
  • Recommend treatment plans and self-help home care
  • Recommend collaborative treatment with other practitioners when necessary
  • Encourage clients to rebook for further treatment when necessary
  • Maintain a healthy, safe, and sanitary environment
  • Ensure the safe and proper use of massage equipment and supplies
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with fellow team members
  • Actively contribute to building a loyal client base through reception, advertising, and marketing, and continually improving the guest experience
  • Provide RMT services in accordance with CSI's policies, procedures, and customer service standards
  • Operate in accordance with the Standards of Practice as set out by the CMTO
  • Participate in Wellness events to help self-promotion of massage services
  • Maintain continual communication with front desk staff to ensure linens are cleaned and available when needed
  • Work closely with the Wellness Coordinator, reporting the status of CSI's massage services
  • Maintain a valid clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check

Other General Duties

  • Work in accordance with corporate by-laws, policies, and procedures, particularly to the CSI Mission Statement
  • Adhere strictly to health & safety laws, policies, and procedures (including COVID-19 policies)
  • Maintain confidentiality for business practices
  • Work in an organized manner where detail, accuracy and confidentiality are critical
  • Mandatory attendance at CSI related training days
  • Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

This position spends long hours standing and exerting physical force, which can cause muscle strain throughout the body.

Environmental Conditions

This position performs work primarily in a small office.

Sensory Demands

This position performs work in a dimly lit environment with potential exposure to scented products.

Mental Demands

This position deals with a wide variety of people on various issues.

Qualifications

  • Registered member in good standing with the Registered Massage Therapists' Association of Ontario
  • Ability to obtain and provide a valid clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check upon request
  • Ability to purchase and provide supplies and materials required for massage therapy
  • Ability to provide Proof of Professional Liability Insurance with a minimum of $2 million upon request
  • Standard First Aid & CPR/AED
  • Candidates will be asked to demonstrate the following:
    • Deep understanding of best practices in massage therapy
    • A passionate, nurturing, and caring disposition
    • Basic computer skills (e.g. scheduling appointments)
    • Ability to write emails and documents in a formal tone
    • Ability to build positive working relationships, especially with other wellness practitioners
    • Cultural competence: Respect and understanding for persons who come from a variety of socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Preference will be given to those who have a deep knowledge of the experience of international students
