The Advisor, Safety and Emergency Preparedness supports the management and continuous improvement of the safety and Occupational Health and Safety programs at STARS. This position works with a high degree of independence implementing and managing OH&S priorities, supporting the Emergency Response Program, and communicating safety best practices across the organization.

Do you have what it takes?

  • Responsible for updating and maintaining Emergency Response, Corporate Crisis preparedness and Business Continuity programs at STARS.
  • Develop, execute and support all training and exercise programs required to enhance corporate emergency preparedness.
  • Actively participate in the Emergency Management Group during periods of activation.
  • Assist with the development and completion of After-Action Reports and Improvement Plans
  • Contribute to the development and revision of emergency management and business continuity content within SharePoint
  • Ensure STARS maintains compliance with its OH&S obligations documented in the federal and provincial health and safety legislation. Provide expert advice as it relates to implementation of OH&S standards which includes monitoring of changes in legislation that could impact the organization
  • Support the organizations legislative requirements regarding the N95 fit testing and hearing conservation programs
  • Promote a safety culture, including Just Culture principles and works to ensure our safety program is well integrated throughout the organization
  • Ensure OH&S safety focus is including in on-boarding documents and is represented at corporate orientations
  • Responsible for the quality assurance of the Safety Management System
  • Ensure safety policies, procedures and SMS documentation are developed, reviewed and updated on a regular intervals
  • Responsible for completion and oversight of organizational Job Hazard Assessments and Physical Demands Analysis
  • In partnership with the Safety Investigator, participate in hazard risk assessments, investigations, and implementation of recommendations to address organizational hazards
  • Support OH&S base safety committees with a focus of promoting STARS safety program, structure, legislative updates, annual federal reporting and shared learnings. Present education and training opportunities to co-chairs for committee members.
  • Lead STARS in the Partners in Injury Reduction (PIR) audit
  • Participate in CAMTS accreditation by representing OHS&S and base safety committees
  • Support the organizational Emergency Management/Response Plan, Communicable Disease Planning and Business Continuity Plan as needed
  • Participate in various safety related committees e.g. Quality Management Committee
  • Ensure fiscal stewardship with Safety budget
  • Other duties as required

Education & Experience:

  • Emergency Management Diploma, Occupational Health and Safety Certificate, or equivalent experience required
  • Strong understanding of Corporate Emergency Management programs
  • Working knowledge of OH&S regulations (both federal and provincial)
  • Experience in planning, developing, executing and monitoring safety programs
  • Knowledge of Safety Management Systems, Hazard and Risk Management
