OVERVIEW

Vertex is currently seeking a full-time, permanent Senior Environmental Risk Assessor to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing subject matter expertise in environmental risk management and risk assessment to our liability management teams throughout Canada. This individual will be an integral member of Vertex's Contaminated Sites Technical team responsible for leading and managing environmental risk assessment projects, providing technical expertise, and delivering strategic recommendations to clients. The role requires expert understanding of environmental regulations, risk assessment methodologies, and project management principles. This role will also provide leadership and mentorship to other team members to build capacity and improve upon Vertex's capabilities in contaminated sites management.


RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead and manage environmental risk assessment projects from initiation to completion, ensuring adherence to project scope, budget, and timeline

• Apply advanced knowledge of environmental science, toxicology, hydrogeology, and other relevant disciplines to assess environmental risks associated with contaminants such as petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, salinity, and other chemicals of potential concern

• Working knowledge of federal, provincial, and municipal environmental regulations and guidelines to ensure that risk assessment methodologies and recommendations align with regulatory requirements.

• Acting as a Subject Matter Expert to effectively communicate complex technical information to clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders through written reports, presentations, and meetings

• Cultivate strong relationships with clients by understanding their needs, providing expert advice, and delivering high-quality solutions that address their environmental risk management challenges

• Collaborate with Vertex multidisciplinary teams of environmental professionals, including engineers, scientists, hydrogeologists, agrologists, and regulatory specialists, to deliver integrated solutions to clients

• Mentor and support junior and intermediate technical staff with respect to environmental assessment planning, technical evaluations, and risk management expertise

• Stay current with advancements in environmental risk assessment methodologies, technologies, and best practices, and incorporate them into project workflows where appropriate and applicable

• Work collaboratively with Vertex managers to effectively and safely schedule staff and resources to address client workloads, with a primary focus on completion of deliverables for complex sites

• Provide senior technical sign off within your scope of practice in alignment of regional standards and the Vertex approach for projects in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia (experience Ontario is an asset)

• Provide Client and Project Management expertise across a range of sectors for clients in which project requirements align with your areas of expertise

• Active in proposal development and business development opportunities as required to support sector or client growth and provide “Though Leadership” at conferences/seminars by presenting and highlighting Vertex's expertise

• Other duties as directed by your direct supervisor or manager. It is expected that the role will evolve over time and duties will be modified to support professional growth and business needs

LOCATION

This position will be based out of Vertex's Calgary or Sherwood Park offices. A hybrid work schedule is available for this role.

WORK REPORTING STRUCTURE

The position will provide risk assessment, risk management, and complex contaminated sites expertise for our Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia Liability Management teams. It is expected that this role will cover projects in a range of sectors including (but not limited to); upstream, downstream, and midstream oil and gas, industrial and commercial developments, mining, manufacturing and processing, and infrastructure.
