Introduction & Key Role Objective

WJ Groundwater is the leading construction dewatering and groundwater specialist in the UK, with operations in Canada, the Middle East, Poland & the Philippines. We have specialized plant and equipment that allows us to install custom dewatering and water treatment systems in various environments, including from within tunnels and shafts and from the surface.

We strive to meet client expectations for water treatment system performance and execute projects on time and on budget. The Technician acts as the leader on-site by directing the Operations team, taking pride in our equipment and staff, and providing support for the Project Manager. It is critical that our Water Treatment systems are installed and commissioned properly, as they will be required to run continuously for years. The Water Treatment Technician will be required to have a strong understanding of each system under their supervision and respond to system issues.

This role has three key objectives:

  1. Act as on-site quality control to ensure water treatment systems are properly installed and running as designed.
  2. Understand and relay site activities from the Project Manager (PM) and client to the Operations team – you will work with PMs to gain a thorough understanding of the design and use this knowledge to effectively direct and coordinate the Operations team. You will determine the most cost-effective materials and methodologies required to achieve the objectives set by the design team. You will assist PMs in developing order lists for planned activities and keep track of materials for site works.
  3. Management of operations resources – working with PMs you will ensure all equipment and material is purchased and delivered in a timely manner, stored properly, and utilized safely and efficiently. You will manage the Operations team and monitor the man hours for each task to ensure schedules are met. You will keep accurate records and ensure that quality paperwork is completed each week.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Act as the on-site point of contact for clients and lead the WJ Operations team in daily activities to ensure water treatment systems are properly installed, commissioned, and maintained.
  • Monitor the performance of water treatment systems; make recommendations for optimizing performance.
  • Respond to system alarms and perform troubleshooting when needed.
  • Coordinate water treatment activities with the client's site staff to ensure proper access is provided and all equipment is on-site and stored in a safe location.
  • Ensure high-quality records are provided to the PMs for reporting and commercial purposes.
  • Attend progress and planning meetings alongside PMs to provide practical input, raise on-site concerns, and give feedback on tentative schedules.
  • Prepare material lists for water treatment system installation and maintenance.
  • Prior to system installation and commissioning, have an understanding of the project objective and provide input for material selection and system installation based on on-site activities and restrictions.
  • Deliver a high-quality 'right the first-time' approach to all operations activities.
  • Manage the activities of the operation crews to ensure alignment with both business & client needs.
  • Demonstrate and lead by example the safe use of tools and proper installation of the systems.
  • Monitor and validate man hours of operations staff (including overtime) to ensure works are performed on schedule.
  • May be required to overlook multiple projects and teams of operatives.
  • Effective coordination of the maintenance works for the systems. Ensure maintenance procedures are carried out for all systems as necessary.
  • Ensure the equipment is consistently presented to a high level to promote a professional image to the customer.
  • To be responsible for own health and safety and that of colleagues in accordance with current construction guidance and relevant national legislation for our activities.

Qualifications & Experience

A motivated and hardworking individual that demonstrates strong initiative. An Environmental or Water and Wastewater Technician Diploma or similar or 5 years of experience operating water treatment systems.

  • Experienced working in water and wastewater treatment plant as a Technician in a variety of circumstances with a range of equipment.
  • Experience in supervising and managing within water treatment projects will be considered an asset.
  • Comprehensive understanding of water management and treatment. You will be confident in the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of all types of construction water treatment systems.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. The ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts to multidisciplinary teams is essential.
  • Resourcefulness, initiative, and the ability to work unsupervised in difficult site conditions.
  • You will have experience and demonstrate evidence of undertaking and briefing others on Risk Assessments and Method
  • A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle are required for travel between Company projects and sites.
  • Wastewater Operator-in-Training or Wastewater Class 1-4 designation will be considered an asset.
  • A general understanding of electrical, instrumentation and process controls will be is considered an asset.
  • A diploma in water treatment program or 5 years of experience operating water treatment systems.

Working Conditions

Your responsibilities will be split approximately 90% on-site and 10% in the office.

Our construction sites can be difficult to access. You must be comfortable working in all outside weather conditions, on heavy industrial construction sides and within confined spaces.
