Position Summary:

The Employment Services at John Howard Society, supported by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development, aims to assist individuals in securing sustainable employment. This comprehensive support includes offering services such as include Resource and Information, Client Service Planning and Coordination, Job Search, Job Matching, Placement and Incentives, and Job Training/ Retention.

The role of Employment/Employer Advisor involves a dual focus on employment counselling and job development. You'll conduct intake interviews/assessments with participants and assist employers in meeting their hiring needs and recruitment goals. This role encompasses counselling, job developing, advocacy, assessment, and monitoring of participants, aiming to clarify their employment and educational requirements while establishing both short- and long-term goals. Emphasis is placed on monitoring and implementing follow-up interventions to promote sustained job retention for participants.

As an Employment/Employer Advisor, you'll oversee an assigned caseload and meet performance targets set by both the agency and funding entities. Your responsibilities will include job developing, creating training and action plans, ensuring accurate maintenance of records, documentation, and statistical information. This meticulous record-keeping serves the purposes of reporting and maintaining accountability.

Responsibilities:

This role is multifaceted, involving responsibilities that contribute to the success of participants and employers alike.

Key Aspects:

  • Assessments and Support: Conduct personalized one-to-one assessments using various tools to help job seekers identify their skills, interests, abilities, and aptitudes. Offer effective case management and referrals for necessary life stabilization support aligning with employment and training goals.
  • Performance Management: Achieve set performance targets and efficiently manage assigned caseloads. Conduct thorough follow-ups with employers, job seekers, and other service providers.
  • Career Development: Offer career development interventions and exploration strategies to job seekers. Provide guidance and referrals to suitable educational and training programs.
  • Job Search and Preparation: Guide job seekers with effective job search strategies and interventions. Prepare them adequately for employment placements and facilitate job development as part of the service plan.
  • Workshops and Orientation: Plan and execute workshops providing crucial employment and labour market information, along with workplace orientation to enhance job search skills as per current labour market indicators.
  • Retention and Coaching: Implement strategies for job retention and offer job coaching support to maintain employment/life stability.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate case documentation into agency data management files/systems, ensuring compliance with EOIS-Cams standards.
  • Job Development: Inclusive of engaging and building rapport with community employers, job matching, job placement, and advocacy to develop employment opportunities for those furthest away from the labour market.

Other Key Responsibilities:

  1. Program Promotion: Actively contribute to program marketing and outreach plans, advocating and promoting JHS training programs within the community.
  2. Performance Reporting: Maintain monthly performance-related statistical reports and liaise with program staff to ensure resource utilization and program coordination.
  3. Referrals and Service Standards: Make appropriate referrals to community agencies while ensuring all services align with JHS's service standards and philosophical beliefs.
  4. Financial Tracking and Documentation: Monitor and maintain financial tracking as required. Complete accurate statistics and reports, consistently developing and implementing new record-keeping methods to ensure accountability and funding requirements are met.
  5. Professional Development: Stay updated on job search techniques and alternative delivery methods, exploring new resources to enhance services.
  6. Agency Representation: Represent the agency in the community when necessary, attending workshops, meetings, and seminars as requested.

Key Relationships:

JHS Durham management team, agency employees, service seekers, and other community agencies and stakeholders. Collaboration with the LBS community, Employment Service Network, and employers to ensure effective service coordination.

Requirements:

  1. Education: Preferred post-secondary diploma or university degree in human services, social work, or employment counselling.
  2. Professional Background: Demonstrated experience in employment and general counselling, possessing knowledge of pre-employment support methods and labour market resources.
  3. Diverse Client Experience: Demonstrated success working with a wide range of job seekers, including youth, newcomers, internationally trained professionals, OW, EI, and ODSP recipients, long-term unemployed individuals, and differently-abled persons.
  4. Communication and Collaboration: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, coupled with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

5. Skills and Competencies: Strong case management and organizational skills.

Proficiency in Windows, Office 365 applications, and computerized career/job search tools.

Experience in Zoom functionalities for hosting/co-hosting meetings and engagement features like polls, breakout rooms, and annotation mode.

Proficiency in social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Hootsuite, and Wordpress.

Strong self-management skills for efficient project goal attainment within tight timelines.

Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and a collaborative team player.

Ability to work in an environment requiring data collection, meeting deadlines, and achieving targets.

Work Conditions

  • May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.
  • Works outside in all weather (modified work for severe weather) and various terrain (as is reasonable)
  • Interacts with the public, clients, staff, visitors, and staff from other organizations.
  • Ongoing physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting.
  • Able to lift items as heavy as 35 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Flexible hours as required.
