Your New Role

Fotenn is looking to hire a Senior/Associate Landscape Architect based out of Fotenn's Toronto office to help expand our practice in the Greater Toronto Area, on both private and public sector projects. To be successful in this role, you'll leverage your 10+ years of experience across private and public sectors. This position's initial focus will be cultivating new business opportunities, building on the proven track of an established firm with a deep portfolio of award-winning project work. The successful candidate will also be dedicated to sustainable landscape architecture and urban design practices, advancing the role of landscape architecture and urban design in the public realm, enhancing the quality of urban life, and the development of successful communities. As the Senior/Associate Landscape Architect, you will play a key role in leading projects, working collaboratively with the planning and urban design team on a variety of development projects, as well as independently on both public and private sector landscape architecture projects as the lead.

Typical Functions

Support the growth and development of Fotenn's landscape architecture practice in Toronto by:

  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with employees, clients, allied professionals, officials, and the community;
  • Organizing and facilitating meetings with consulting teams to introduce and discuss new development proposals, and urban design and landscape architecture projects;
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to Junior and Intermediate Landscape Architects / Designers;
  • Collaborating with the landscape architecture, urban design, and planning teams across Fotenn's three offices;
  • Provide input to the Partners and Senior Management team on the pursuit of business development objectives;
  • Promoting the company and pursuing professional growth through presentations at conferences, information sessions, industry networking events, and written contributions to professional publications and promotional materials.

Oversee all aspects of project delivery including:

  • Managing and overseeing a full workload of small, medium, and large landscape architecture projects, ensuring that deliverables are of high quality and are provided in a timely and efficient manner;
  • Assigning, coordinating, and monitoring project progress;
  • Meeting with new and existing private and public sector clients;
  • Fostering and maintaining active business development networks, including responding to requests for proposals and preparing of proposal documents;
  • Completing site inventory and analysis activities;
  • Preparing concept drawings and master plans;
  • Designing and preparing illustrative and graphic materials to visually communicate recommendations and/or solutions;
  • Providing direction for the preparation of illustrative and graphic presentation materials for public hearings, meetings, studies, and reports;
  • Presenting to clients, stakeholders, community associations, municipal committees and councils;
  • Undertaking preliminary and detailed design plans;
  • Overseeing the preparation of contract documents, including technical working drawings (layout and material plans, grading plans, planting plans, and details), specifications, and cost estimates;
  • Supporting Junior and Intermediate Landscape Architects / Designers with construction administration and field reviews.

Typical Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of site planning and design and preparing landscape architecture documents;
  • Strong knowledge of technical aspects of detailed design and experience preparing landscape construction drawings and documents;
  • Current knowledge of theory, principles, practices, and techniques used in urban design, architecture or landscape architecture, development processes, charrette process, and cartography;
  • Knowledge of land development and municipal approval process;
  • Knowledge of computer software and applications such as Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling (SketchUp, Revit), and various forms of video conferencing and communication;
  • Full Membership (Seal and Certificate) in the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA). Candidates without this shall demonstrate their ability to obtain Full Membership within 60 days of hiring.

Typical Skills

  • High degree of competency in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, 3D modeling (SketchUp, Revit);
  • Excellent hand-drawing skills;
  • Excellent design and visual communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team;
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and write clearly;
  • Initiative, independence, project coordination, and problem solving skills;
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines and project budgets.
