Position Overview
The core responsibilities of the Intermediate C/L Underwriter are to evaluate commercial business, determine acceptability impose conditions, warranties and deductibles and provide quotes and calculations for new and existing business. Training and mentorship of less-experienced underwriters of the Commercial line of business would be expected from this underwriter. Ensure all work completed complies with HTM underwriting policies and procedures based on a Level II authority level.
Position Responsibilities
Underwriting (75%)
- Multi-line underwriting in Property, Casualty and Commercial Auto and Fleet
- Provide quotes on new and existing files, complete prospect notes and binds coverage
- Complete a thorough quoting sheet and return to Broker within a 24-hour turnaround
- Complete manual ratings
- Verify information on applications, assess risk and communicate rates and conditions to Brokers
- Review Insured's history, gather information from previous carriers and identify previous rejections
- Review completed inspection documents, including examining photos, cost estimators and questionnaires to determine that the physical condition of the buildings qualify for the package requested
- Send a copy of the inspection report to the appropriate Broker with a memo outlining any areas of concern and recommendations; follow-up with Brokers regarding resolution of those issues
- For composite policies, conduct an initial site visit to determine risk and if HTM will move forward with coverage for that commercial property; collaborate with Brokers to determine values, coverage and rates if moving forward
- Complete all aspects of the paperless renewal process two months in advance; review each renewal in detail
- Review renewals and check claims records to identify information that may affect the renewal of policies to determine and take action (send memo to Insured, Broker, etc)
- Check coverage for current wordings, liaise with Broker to gather current information related to file renewals
- Send memos if insurance policy will be changed and/or discontinued
- Data enter new policy information and endorsements, determine riders, class codes and complete renewal process
- Complete endorsements within a five day period
- Determine need for physical risk inspections and order an inspection if required
- Conduct visits when necessary or applicable for high risk commercial properties to review site conditions and conduct a risk assessment
- Determine underwriting acceptability, coverage and rates, including calculation of premium and process changes for endorsements
- Liaise with reinsurers regarding special risk and special rates
- Work with FMRP regarding rate approvals, limits and coverage where required
- Participate in department meetings and make suggestions for improvements in policy wordings, rates and guidelines, as well as process improvements to quality of service provided
- Provide back up to Senior Commercial Underwriter when required
Administration and Relationship Building (25%)
- Liaise with Brokers to explain coverages, exclusions, procedures, rates and manuals; act as a resource and develop a strong working relationship with them
- Conduct Broker visits to maintain strong relationships
- Create and promote new packages to Brokers outlining revisions to rates and coverage
- Compose documents such as memos and letters to Brokers and Insureds
- Respond to telephone, fax, email and mail inquiries; provide information and resolve issues
- Contribute to reviews for Broker performance when requested
- Visit Brokers on a regular basis to build and maintain effective working relationships with periodic training and presentations to brokers/agents
- Put processes in place to enable an easy referral system from Brokers
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities with key Brokers
- Comply with HTM policies and procedures
- Monitor the marketplace and liaise with industry contacts to keep abreast of the changes to the insurance industry
- Participate and attend training and development initiatives, including industry related events
Education and Experience
Must Have:
- College diploma or University degree
- CIP completed or near completion

Experience Required:
- Commercial Lines Underwriting
- Commercial Automobile and Fleet Underwriting
- 5-7 years commercial underwriting experience
