Nature & Scope → Your Role at Roots
Reporting to the VP, Finance, the Financial Controller will play a key leadership role in managing and optimizing all aspects of accounting operations at Roots. From overseeing transactions across the general ledger, accounts receivable and payable, inventory, and banking, to supporting payroll and collaborating with key teams - this role is essential in maintaining financial excellence and driving strategic decision-making. You’ll work closely with our Reporting and FP&A teams to meet public company requirements and help shape the financial foundation for future growth.

You thrive in a hands-on, fast-paced environment, and are currently leading - or have recently led - a team at the Controller level within a mid-size organization. Experience in retail, apparel, or e-commerce is a strong asset. You bring a “roll-up-your-sleeves” attitude, a passion for process improvement, and the ability to think strategically while managing day-to-day financial operations.
Key Responsibilities → How You’ll Make an Impact
- Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, banking, inventory management, and revenue recognition, providing leadership and mentorship to the team members.
- Support payroll operations in collaboration with Human Resources, ensuring accuracy, appropriate cost allocations, and timely reconciliations, while maintaining financial controls and budget alignment.
- Take a hands-on approach, stepping in to support various operational tasks as needed. Flexible in addressing priorities beyond formal job duties.
- Serve as a key finance contact for the Company’s major suppliers, service providers, and business partners, and support contract review and onboarding of new service providers.
- Ensure finance ledgers are prepared and reconciled on a timely basis, with accuracy and completeness. Assist the reporting team with quarterly financial reporting needs and support coordination with the Company’s external auditors.
- Assist the FP&A team with the preparation of budgets and forecasts.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with teams, including Human Resources, Retail Operations, Legal, and IT.
- Assist in the preparation tax compliance, including Canadian / U.S. income tax and sales tax filings.
- Manage and comply with government reporting and registration requirements for a public company.
- Build and refine tools and processes to improve financial infrastructure, internal controls and general organizational effectiveness/efficiency.
Qualifications & Experience → The Skills You Bring
- 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience.
- Business degree with a CPA designation required.
- Prior experience in controllership roles leading and mentoring teams considered an asset.
- Willing to be a hands-on individual contributor.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and well-versed in use of PowerPoint, with the ability and desire to learn new applications.
- Self-directed, eager to learn, and resourceful, but not afraid to seek guidance
