JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Safety, Environment, Training & Security Coordinator to support and enhance our Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) programs with our Truro Sawmill and Nova Scotia Woodlands teams, based in Truro, Nova Scotia. This multifaceted role is responsible for promoting a safe and environmentally responsible workplace, coordinating employee training, and overseeing site security protocols.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Health & Safety

  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of HSE policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections, audits, and risk assessments.
  • Lead incident investigations and ensure timely follow-up on corrective actions.
  • Maintain safety records, statistics, and compliance documentation.
  • Participating in the monthly JOHSC safety meetings
  • Coordinate and maintain compliance for period safety meetings and toolbox talks.

Environment

  • Monitor compliance with environmental regulations and internal standards.
  • Assist with environmental reporting (e.g., emissions, waste, spills).
  • Support sustainability initiatives and environmental risk assessments.
  • Coordinate environmental training and awareness campaigns.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies and support environmental audits.

Training Coordination

  • Develop and maintain a training matrix for all roles and departments.
  • Schedule and coordinate internal and external training sessions (e.g., WHMIS, First Aid, Confined Space, Fall Protection).
  • Track training completion and certification renewals.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness and recommend improvements.

Security

  • Oversee site security protocols, including access control, visitor management, and emergency response procedures.
  • Liaise with security service providers and ensure compliance with company standards.
  • Conduct security audits and support investigations related to security incidents.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Human Resources, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a safety, environmental, or training coordination role.
  • Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., CRSP, CHSC, or equivalent) is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of provincial and federal safety and environmental legislation (e.g., NS Occupational Health and Safety Act, CEPA).
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and safety/environmental management software.
  • Valid certifications in First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, Confined Space, Fall Protection, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG).
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
