About Us

The Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills, and Immigration (LSI) works to contribute to a competitive workforce by making strategic investments in people, programs, services, and partnerships. LSI's mandate is to provide a fair, equitable, safe, productive, and inclusive environment in which to learn, work and live.
The Department's mandate is broad and includes regulatory responsibility for occupational health and safety, and technical safety. The Safety Branch assumes these regulatory responsibilities and leads the building of a culture of safety in Nova Scotia through leadership, service delivery, engagement, partnerships, regulatory programs, and education. The Occupational Health & Safety Division (within the Safety Branch) plays an integral role in setting, promoting, verifying, and enforcing compliance.
The Engineering and Science Section of the Occupational Health and Safety Division provides a wide range of technical expertise in the areas of Occupational Hygiene, Mining, Blasting, Radiation, and Oil & Gas. Engineering and Science staff respond to a broad range of technical queries on topics that require in-depth research and competence in areas of chemistry, physics, mining, mechanics, electricity, and electronics.

About Our Opportunity

As the Summer Student Engineer, you will help support our mandate and provide insights into the health and safety responsibilities of a Professional Engineer. You will assist with the review of equipment and procedure documentation, prepare responses to technical queries, and assist in the inspection of a variety of workplaces. This activity would give excellent exposure to an aspiring engineer and augment our technical staff. You will be mentored by our Professional Engineering staff and will work out of the Dartmouth office but may be asked to participate in compliance initiatives throughout the province.

About You

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have completed at least your 3rd year of an accredited University Engineering program at a Canadian University and are returning to school to continue with either the 4th or 5th year of your program in the fall of 2024.
You possess effective communication (written and verbal) and time management skills, able to manage various tasks while maintaining deadlines. You have demonstrated research and analytical skills along with experience reviewing documents and technical drawings.
Additionally, you should be an individual looking to actively contribute to an innovative environment. You are also a self-motivated individual who wants to learn and can produce results when working independently or within a team environment.
