Description

Carry out daily client (community members in need) interaction including screening, intake, applications, guidance, service distribution and referrals. Participate in food and clothing donation acquisition, triage, packaging and distribution. Support Program Coordinator and Caseworker in initiatives to better serve our clients.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General:

  • Conduct initial intake application and screen clients for general emergency assistance, including food, clothing household needs, referrals etc.
  • Coordinate the allocation of clothing; setting appointments, complete record keeping and correspondence with sponsors as required.
  • Provide support and assistance to other staff/volunteers.
  • Assist with providing training to new volunteers.
  • Assist as needed in receiving food supplies and restocking pantry items, clothing rooms etc.
  • Assist in the organization, maintenance and general cleanliness of the food bank and warehouse.
  • Maintain accurate records of client information on the Link2Feed portal while maintaining confidentiality and providing operational and statistical reports as needed.
  • Provide administrative support and assistance to Community Family Services as required. i.e. organize/maintain office records/files/supplies; maintain daily program statistics, photocopying, faxing and maintain daily communication logbook etc.
  • Assist in updating literature, bulletin boards and brochures; maintain office calendar of events, and community events.
  • Provide casework status updates to the Program Coordinator as requested.
  • Develop and maintain a good understanding of services provided by external agencies; maintain ongoing engagement/involvement with community partners to ensure clients receive support as needed from Wellington County Ontario Works Program, Drop-In Centre and Community Mental Health Association etc.
  • Participate and assist with application processes as required in programs provided by Community and Family Services (i.e. Summer Camp, Moms & Kids Camp, Community Food Drives, Community Garden) and provide assistance with other program development.
  • Participation at community meetings/client referrals as directed by supervisor.
  • Take part in social services training and development sessions.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary position based on 35 hours per week.

Normal hours of work: The hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor as per operational requirements which are Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable.

  • This job requires the ability to lift/move 25 lbs. and reach, bend, stand, sit, and use a computer.
  • Working environment is typically in agreeable conditions.
  • Working location is primarily 210 Victoria Rd S, Guelph. Incumbent may infrequently be required to complete tasks at our secondary location, 1320 Gordon St, Guelph.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Completion of a Secondary School.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR is an asset but not required.
  • Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.
  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
  • Is between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment.
  • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
  • holds a valid Social Insurance Number; and,
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • *International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has ben granted refugee status in Canada.
  • An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Some prior related experience including, administrative experience and experience dealing with office equipment and tools.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, an asset.

  • Must have excellent written, verbal and computer skills.
  • Use of computers (Microsoft Suite, Link2Feed online portal). Handing and processing of donated items.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics.
  • Organized, hardworking, dedicated, creative, and possess leadership qualities.
  • Able to work well independently and as in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry may be required.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
