Deadline for application: June 1, 2024 - Posting will remain up until filled.About the OpportunitiesThe Dalhousie University Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management and PerioperativeMedicine is seeking anesthesiologists to join our clinical/academic department of over 100members in the greater Halifax area (exact number of positions to be determined), to workwithin the Central Zone of Nova Scotia Health and/or the IWK Health Centre. There arepositions available at the three sites:

o Nova Scotia Health - Adult Anesthesiao IWK Health Centre - Women's and Obstetric Anesthesia

Working within the province's quaternary and tertiary care centres, the Department provides afull spectrum of specialty anesthesia care to patients in Atlantic Canada as well as nationallyand internationally through outreach initiatives, and innovation in airway management. Itadministers leading edge programs in perioperative medicine, perioperative bloodmanagement and pain management. The Department's subspecialty anesthesia practicecomprises pain management, cardiac anesthesia, neurosurgical anesthesia, obstetricalanesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, thoracic anesthesia and transplantation. Surgical servicessupported by anesthesia within hospitals include but are not limited to orthopedics,ophthalmology, oral and maxillofacial, cardiac surgery, vascular, ENT, plastic, neuro, thoracic,transplantation, urology and adult trauma.

As a member of the active staff, the successful applicants will provide comprehensiveanesthetic clinical care to patients. They may be granted a faculty appointment (minimally atthe rank of Assistant Professor) at Dalhousie University upon hire and will support the academicmandate of the Department through administrative, education and research activities withinthe field of anesthesia, pain management and perioperative medicine. There are opportunitiesfor paid protected time for research and education activities deemed to benefit the academicmission of the Department.Location:Nova Scotia Health positions will be focused on adults and will work within the clinical sites ofthe Central Zone of Nova Scotia Health, exact locations to be determined by the Head. Staffmay be required to work at any site within the boundaries of the Central Zone, including:

• QEII Health Sciences Centre, at both the Halifax Infirmary (HI) and the Victoria General

• Dartmouth General Hospital, Dartmouth

• Hants Community Hospital, Windsor

• Scotia Surgery, DartmouthIWK Health Centre positions will focus on Pediatric Anesthesia and Women's and ObstetricAnesthesia respectively.The positions may be required to work up to a maximum of three weeks per year in otherlocations in Nova Scotia.Language of Work: EnglishTerm: Regular full-time and locums, negotiableResponsibilities:

• Effectively and safely deliver the full scope of speciality anesthesia care/services to

• Fully and equitably participate in the relevant on-call schedule(s).• Participate in patient safety and quality improvement activities and rounds.• Participate in clinical teaching and instructing as required in undergraduate,

postgraduate and fellowship programs.• Contribute to the research activities of the Department as a clinician scientist, the

details of which will be negotiated with the Department Head or designate (IWKDepartment Head) on an annual basis and will depend on the needs of the Department.

• Participate actively in departmental administration through involvement indepartmental meetings and committees.

• Provide effective communications to patients and their families, engaging them in theircare planning and decisions.

• Foster positive, respectful and collaborative relationships with students, residents andclinical and administrative colleagues.

Expected hours:

• Permanent full-time, 0.8 FTE to 1.0 FTE with flexibility in FTE or shorter-term locum

• Participation in on-call schedules.Qualifications:

• Doctorate in Medicine (or suitable equivalent such as Doctor of Osteopathy);• Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia;

• Have certification as an anesthesiologist with the Royal College of Physicians andSurgeons of Canada, or in exceptional cases, will consider those eligible to write theRoyal College exams;

o For Nova Scotia Health positions - Fellowship training and/or a demonstrated

excellence in academic medicine through clinical experienceo For IWK Health Centre positions –Fellowship or other equivalent training in pediatric

anesthesia or obstetrical anesthesia• Strong interpersonal and communications skills with a focus on patient safety and

quality• Experience in a complex health sciences centre is a strong asset, as well as research or

teaching experienceCompensation:Compensation depends on FTE assignment, hours worked and on-call schedules.

The position is compensated by APMPM Administration Inc. through the Department's ClinicalAcademic Funding Plan (CAFP), a multi-stakeholder agreement that provides block funding tocompensate physicians and cover departmental operational costs. The Department's PracticePlan outlines the ways in which the revenues are distributed by the members.
