Intermediate Project Engineer, Land Development

R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Project Engineer to join our Land Development team.

The location would be in either our Guelph, Mississauga, or Hamilton offices. The position would require working with teams from various Burnside locations and may require some travel for meetings.

Burnside's land development group works with an established client list, in both residential, commercial and industrial development, including major builders and developers, and smaller local developers with whom we have worked for extensively for years and have built strong relationships for repeat business. The team also deals with development and/or re-development of downtown GTA properties, urban "brown field" sites, and greenfield properties.

The team is involved in projects which include all types and sizes of development including:

  • Greenfield low-rise development;
  • Shopping centers;
  • Low density infill urban subdivisions;
  • High and mid density condominium and townhouse residential;
  • Industrial buildings and institutional buildings;
  • Small multiple developments to large scale mixed residential developments of acreage; and
  • Large Scale mixed use commercial retail and office buildings.

The team assists clients on projects from concept to completion, including:

  • Providing due diligence services at land acquisition stage;
  • Preliminary engineering in support of development applications;
  • Detailed design;
  • Contract administration;
  • Field review services; through to
  • Final acceptance of the development by the municipality.

Role Specifics

The successful candidate will generally work independently and will be the main point of contact with clients and agencies on a variety of Land Development projects and will also direct the internal workload with a supporting team.

The work involves (but is not limited to) carrying out the following tasks, and includes directing a team of engineers, CETs, EITs, and other technical professionals, to achieve this:

  • Oversee and manage the day-to-day project work on specific project teams (variable staffing hierarchy depending on the day) possibly across multiple offices;
  • Ensure project schedules, deadlines and budgets are well communicated and executed;
  • Act as primary client contact and manage all client and external agency correspondence;
  • Manage the production of detailed engineering design documents, grading and servicing designs, and SWM for subdivisions and site plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D;
  • Input into project budgeting and preparation of proposals;
  • Develop strong relationships with our existing client base and identify potential business initiatives;
  • Work closely with staff at various levels to ensure projects are carried out in an efficient and professional manner, through meetings, conference calls, and other media;
  • Assist with the coordination of workload for junior and support staff in order to meet project deliverables;
  • Work with senior designers to review Civil 3D efficiencies and design QA/QC;
  • Provide Quality Control review and oversight on design and project deliverables;
  • Understand the clients' business objectives on projects;
  • Travel as needed for client and agency meetings, and occasional site meetings;
  • Support other internal Burnside project teams from other sectors when needed; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Professional Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

The following qualifications, experience and skills are required:

  • Registered Professional Engineer (Ontario / PEO) with 4 years minimum of licensure;
  • Graduation from a University program in Civil Engineering or similar civil design-related education with minimum 6 years of experience in land development;
  • Three years of design management, preferably in the context of land development projects;
  • Strong analytical skills and data management with proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite of programs including MS Project for creation of detailed project schedules;
  • Thorough knowledge of municipal and provincial review processes and standards for permitting and approvals;
  • Effective technical writer and oral communicator;
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to multi-task and work on a number of projects concurrently, leading staff teams;
  • Fundamentals of low rise development engineering and municipal drainage and SWM design; and
  • A valid Ontario driver's license and vehicle.

The following experience and skills are considered additional assets:

  • Stormwater management; and
  • Field services and contract administration experience.
