About the work environment: Peoples Group offers a flexible and hybrid work environment. In this role you will work a combination of in-office and remotely from home. Typically, you'll be working regular business hours, Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 4:30pm with flexibility around start & end times. This position will require work outside of business hours from time to time given the demands of the business and the seniority of the position. About you / qualifications:

  • LLB or Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with a provincial bar association
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience practicing law, with a focus on the financial industry and regulatory compliance
  • Proven leadership experience, with a track record of effectively managing and developing legal teams and advising senior business leadership
  • Strong understanding of financial institution regulation in Canada, including banking, trust, payments, and consumer protection laws
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and sound judgment in handling confidential and sensitive information

About the day-to-day:

  • Partner with the Chief Legal Officer in providing strategic legal advice and guidance to senior management, the board of directors, and other stakeholders on a wide range of legal issues affecting the financial institution
  • Oversee and manage a team of legal professionals, providing leadership, guidance, and mentorship to ensure the effective delivery of legal services and support across the organization - guiding the legal team in support of complex transactions and new business development
  • Collaborate with various departments, including Compliance, Risk Management, and Operations, to develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to design effective and efficient legal services delivery and manage compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Review, draft, and negotiate complex legal documents and agreements, including contracts, regulatory filings, and other legal documents, to protect the interests of the organization
  • Stay abreast of changes in laws, regulations, and industry trends impacting the financial industry and advise senior management on potential implications and strategic responses
  • Manage and oversee litigation matters and external legal counsel, including litigation strategy, settlement negotiations, and risk management
  • Represent the organization in legal proceedings, negotiations, and other interactions with regulatory agencies, counterparties, and external stakeholders
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on various legal issues affecting the organization and provide timely and accurate advice and recommendations to senior management
  • Collaborate with peers across the organization as part of the senior leadership team, helping to develop corporate strategy and build and strengthen a high performance culture

Annual Compensation: Peoples Group is pleased to offer employees a competitive annual salary and discretionary profit share opportunity. Salary for this position will vary between $250,000 and $315,000 per year depending on the knowledge, skills, abilities & experience that the chosen candidate possess.
