The Project Manager of Special Projects will work to ensure that their assigned project achieves its goals for safety, quality, schedule, budget, client satisfaction. Primary duties are to manage the project from award to completion and specifically to manage project information, contracts, financial reporting, safety, quality, and schedule. Working closely with the Superintendent, Estimator, and other departments to successfully deliver the project for our clients.

Working directly with clients, consultants, architects, engineers, trade contractors and suppliers, always representing Bird as a construction professional. Understanding the project goals and communicating this to all stakeholders to enable collaboration and teamwork. Support colleagues as required so that they can deliver on their responsibilities as part of the team.

Special Projects is about providing a higher level of service and the best candidate will have a proven track record and reputation for high performance.

This position will be based in our Edmonton office.

What You Will Be Working On
  • Demonstrates Safety Leadership and work to ensure safety goals are exceeded on each project.

  • Ensure each project implements a Quality Management Plan.

  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, consultants, and trade contractors.

  • Assist with Business Development, Estimating, and Pre-Construction activities.

  • Manage project information and documentation, proficiency with MS Teams, SharePoint, Procore, and Office 365 are necessary to be successful in this role.

  • Administer and Manage contracts and subcontracts, including negotiation and compliance management.

  • Commitment to continuous improvement and complete company ordered training.

  • Attend company events or industry events representing Bird.

  • Assist with Tender Closings, RFP submissions, and interview sessions and all other project securement activities.

  • Participate in pricing activities including estimating, budgeting, tender analysis, during Pre-Construction.

  • Lead financial management of the assigned project, including original budget setting, change order and cash allowance management, monthly and quarterly reporting.

  • Proficiency with Vista by ViewPoint or other Construction ERP Software is an asset, but not necessary.

  • Ensure project insurance, security, and contracts are in place prior to commencing work.

  • Lead or participate in developing Risk Matrix and implement recommendations.

  • Develop Critical Path Method Schedules with key milestones using Microsoft Project. Establish baseline and update schedules regularly.

  • Participate or lead Pull Planning sessions with project team including owner, consultants, and trade contractors. Lean CM certification an asset for this role.

  • Ensure that project achieves all sustainability goals including LEED, WELL, or Green Globes. Implement Waste Diversion and Reduction on projects.

  • Communication in writing, in person, virtual, and presenting to senior leaders and external stakeholders.

What we are looking for:
  • 5+ years of experience as a Project Manager leading commercial, institutional, retail projects that range from $500k to $10M

  • Completed post secondary education in construction-related or business field or applicable entrepreneurial experience, or trade certification or other related construction industry experience

  • Experience with various contract delivery models including, Construction Management, Design Build, Stipulated Sum, and Integrated Project Delivery

  • Local market experience and construction industry relationships

  • Demonstrated Project Management capabilities

  • Consistency in delivering good outcomes

  • Proficient in technology and software including Microsoft 365, MS Teams, SharePoint, Procore, MS Project, Bluebeam; experience with Vista by ViewPoint is considered an asset

  • Valid driver's license

  • Ability to obtain security clearance

  • Any of the following certifications or training is considered a valued asset:

  • LEED AP

  • WELL AP

  • CCA Gold Seal

  • LEAN CM

  • PMP

  • Red Seal Certification in Trade

  • Safety
