Job Summary:
In this role you will report to the Executive Director, Operations. You will be responsible for leading the grievance and claims process. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of Canadian labor laws and regulations, along with exceptional communication and negotiation skills. The Grievance and Claims Specialist will manage the grievance process on behalf of BCIB and will facilitate processes and activities between the Contractor/s, the unions and legal that support the grievance stages.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Represent BCIB in grievance proceedings and negotiations.
- Lead the grievance process, including documenting and meeting with employee and shop steward/s.
- Respond to grievances filed by union members and initiate the investigation process in a timely manner.
- Conduct thorough investigations into grievances to gather relevant information, including interviewing employees, reviewing documentation, and assessing compliance with collective bargaining agreements and employment laws.
- Build strong relationships with and act as the liaison between BCIB on-site operations, BCIB's HR, trade unions and contractors.
- Communicate effectively with union representatives and affected employees throughout the grievance process, providing updates on the status of investigations and any proposed resolutions.
- Serve as a liaison between the union, BCIB and legal counsel to address grievances effectively and ensure compliance with our collective bargaining agreement – The Community Benefits Agreement (CBA).
- Research labor laws, collective bargaining agreements, and industry standards to support grievance resolution and negotiations.
- Maintain accurate records of grievances, investigation findings, and any resolutions reached, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and collective bargaining agreements.
- Identify and communicate issues and concerns to BCIB HR and Operation's leadership.
- Collaborate with the site teams to help resolve issues, concerns, grievances, or questions which cannot be resolved at the site level.
- Develop and implement procedures in the Workforce Management System (WMS) for grievances and labour relations that align with BCIB's policies and practices.
- Collaborate with BCIB HR, Operations, and the Executive Team to share information, ideas, and best practices to support the on-site workforce.
- Track and monitor all grievances and report out on findings and issues, providing regular updates to BCIB HR and Operation's leadership.
- Provide a grievance and claims report to leadership as required.
Qualifications & Years of Experience:
- Degree in human resources or industrial relations.
- Four years minimum related experience working in a unionized setting.
- Experience managing the grievance process required.
- Knowledge of relevant employment and labour legislation, including the BC Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, Labor Relations Code.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License and a clean driving record, with the ability to drive a mid to large size vehicle.
- Willingness to travel to project locations as/when required.
- Ability to be on call as/when required.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong written communication and formal documentation skills.
- Exceptional oral communication skills and issue resolution experience.
- Ability to facilitate and mediate employee/employer issues.
- Extensive knowledge dealing with case management issues.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with others.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This role has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Schedule:
- Full time: 37.5 hours per week
- Monday – Friday
- Hybrid – BCIB currently follows a hybrid schedule where employees work from the BCIB head office a minimum of three days. Based on the needs and demands of the role, more days may be required.
Compensation:
- The range offered for this position is: $90,000 – $95,000 annually.
- Compensation offered within this range is based on factors unique to each candidate, including skills, qualifications, experience and credentials.
