The Rare Book Collection consists of 9000 pre-20th century monographs, manuscripts and periodicals that cover expeditions, natural history and biological and earth sciences dating back to the 1500s. The CMN has received funding from the Kenneth M. Molson Foundation for the conservation work on the rare book collection at the CMN. The Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN) is seeking an innovative and creative student conservator to join its Conservation lab. The student will have the opportunity to participate in conservation activities related to the CMN Rare Book Collection.This is a large multi-year project to address the conservation and collection care needs for the book collection. The work done this year will help set the standards for the care of this important collection. This job opportunity can be full-time or part-time, depending on the candidate's availability. The student in this role will be: Work with the Conservation Team and the Library, Archives and Special Collections Team to address key conservation issues identified as part of the Conservation Survey of the Rare Book Collection. Addressing the conservation and rehousing needs of the books in the collection in greatest need of stabilization. This work may include cleaning, tear repairs, repair to inner joints, consolidation of leather, making enclosures for storage, etc. Written and photographic documentation. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following basic requirements: Enrolled in a university undergraduate or college program in Conservation or Museum Studies or Library program (or a related field with course in paper and/or book conservation); candidates must be registered to return full-time to their studies in winter 2025; Ability to speak and write in English or French is essential Good knowledge of paper and/or book conservation practices; Experience in paper and/or book minor repairs and enclosing work; Good attention to details and ability to organize tasks and data when dealing with large collections; Ability to maintain self-motivation in a variety of team and independent task scenarios. Computer fluency and experience with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word; SALARY: Rates of pay are determined at the initial appointment or reappointment stage and are based on the incumbent's current academic level as per the museum's terms and conditions of employment for students . The official working period is from Monday to Friday between 8:00 and 16:00. NOTE: Canadian citizenship is not required, however individuals must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
