Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator

Role:

This position is for responsible for the ongoing development and enhancement of the plant's Occupational Health and Safety [OHS] Program. This involves implementing the approved health and safety initiatives to maintain compliance with OHS legislation; performing inspections of the facility and equipment; identifying potential hazards and recommending preventative measures; investigating incidents and supporting the facility in general health initiatives.

Responsibilities:
  • Management of day-to-day Occupational Health & Safety [OHS] issues.
  • Support Management to ensure compliance with applicable legislation.
  • Ensuring the quality of investigations and their completion
  • Ensure the implementation of safety initiatives.
  • Assist with new Employee/Worker/Visitor/Contractor orientation.
  • Conduct Risk Assessments (i.e.: informal and formal inspections), develop and share recommendations to mitigate hazardous conditions.
  • Support in preparing and monitoring occupational related claims.
  • Support in preparing and monitoring non-occupational related claims.
  • Support in arranging and coordinating Graduated-Return-to-Work [GRTW] plans.
  • Steering the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee [JOHSC].
  • Provide reports and statistical information as required.
  • Provide safety-related coaching, tutoring, mentoring, and training.
  • Provide/prepare/maintain/update Safe Work Processes.
  • Support OHS initiatives and activities.
  • Perform any other reasonably assigned duties as requested.
  • Work with various Regulators to work towards COR certification [OSSE]
Required Experience and Education:
  • Diploma in an accredited Occupational Health and Safety certification program.
  • 3+ years' experience in the administration of safety policies and legislative compliance.
  • Occupational First Aid [OFA] training an asset.
  • Experience with Confined Space Entry/Rescue ticket an asset
  • Experience with Manned Elevated Work Platform [MEWP] ticket an asset
  • Experience in a Food Processing plant an asset.
  • Experience with Ammonia and/or CO2 systems an asset.
  • Train the Trainer accreditation in Equipment operation an asset.
  • Current 3M fit test an asset.
  • CRSP or equivalent designation an asset
Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong work ethic high level of integrity and transparency when dealing with others.
  • Ability to work independently as well as being a strong team player.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with union and management personnel.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Act.
  • Knowledge of Graduated-Return-to-Work [GRTW] programs.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel).
  • Maintain good attendance, a positive attitude, respectful behaviour, and lead by example
Working Conditions:
  • Potentially compressed and/or variable work schedule(s) with overtime [OT] as required.
  • Exposure to wet/cool conditions – potential for ice and slippery working conditions.
  • Exposure to excessive noise.
  • Exposure to working at heights.
Personal Protective Equipment:
  • Warm clothing, rubber CSA approved footwear to be supplied by Employee.
  • CSA rated prescription eyewear (if required) to be supplied by the Employee.
  • Bump cap/hard hat, smock(s), hearing protection, CSA rated eye protection, any required specialized PPE in addition to appropriate gloves to be provided by the Employer.
