As a Senior Paralegal, you will play a crucial role in our legal team, leading case preparations and presentations at the Landlord and Tenant Board and managing Small Claims Court litigation. Your responsibilities will include advising on residential tenancy laws, negotiating settlements, and handling legal strategies for human rights violation cases. You will also maintain client relationships through effective communication and manage internal team dynamics by mentoring junior staff. This role requires a deep understanding of legal procedures, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects efficiently. Lead the preparation and presentation of cases before the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB), ensuring compliance with the Residential Tenancy Act and Rental Fairness Act. Conduct thorough assessments of landlord-tenant disputes, advising clients on legal strategies, and negotiating settlements where possible. Stay abreast of legislative changes and case law affecting LTB matters. Small Claims Court Litigation: Manage the entire litigation process in Small Claims Court, from drafting pleadings to representing clients in trials and settlement conferences. Collaborate with legal assistants to ensure accurate and organized documentation throughout the litigation process. Human Rights Legislation: Apply a nuanced understanding of the Ontario Human Rights Code to cases involving discrimination, ensuring that clients are well-represented in human rights matters. Conduct thorough investigations into alleged human rights violations and develop robust legal strategies to protect clients' interests. Fire Protection and Prevention Act: Integrate knowledge of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act into property-related litigation cases, particularly those involving fire safety compliance and disputes. Collaborate with experts and consultants to gather technical information and evidence related to fire safety regulations. Ontario Building Code: Utilize comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code to address disputes related to property standards, construction defects, and building code violations. Advise clients on compliance with building code regulations and represent them in litigation involving these matters. Legal Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth legal research to support litigation strategies and stay current on developments in property law, human rights law, and related fields. Analyze and interpret complex legal issues, providing clear and concise guidance to clients and colleagues. Contract Preparation and Review: Take charge of drafting, reviewing, and revising a wide array of contracts, including but not limited to lease agreements, service agreements, and partnership agreements. This responsibility involves ensuring that all contracts are clear, enforceable, and aligned with the client's goals and legal requirements. Ensure all contracts comply with current laws, regulations, and industry standards, reducing the risk of legal challenges and enforcement actions. This includes staying updated on changes in legislation that may affect the client's business and adjusting contract templates accordingly. Work closely with various departments or stakeholders to ensure contracts reflect the operational, financial, and strategic interests of the business. Facilitate communication between parties to ensure mutual understanding and agreement on contract terms. Foster strong client relationships by providing regular updates, managing expectations, and ensuring clear communication throughout the litigation process. Mentor and guide junior paralegals and legal assistants, sharing knowledge and fostering professional development within the team. Collaborate with other legal professionals within or outside of the firm to ensure cohesive and effective representation. Litigation Experience: Minimum of 10 years of hands-on LTB (Landlord and Tenant Board), trials and litigation experience, preferably in property-related matters. Paralegal diploma or equivalent legal education from a recognized institution. Paralegal License: Must hold a valid paralegal license from the Law Society of Ontario. Developing analytical and research skills to contribute effectively to legal strategies. Ability to adapt to evolving legal landscapes and learn new areas of law.
