Tidewater has an immediate opening for a Payroll and Benefits Specialist. This is a full-time position based out of our Calgary head office . This is a fast paced, deadline driven role that requires superb organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Administers and maintains full cycle payroll, including biweekly and semimonthly updates to employee files, bonus/incentive pay, vacation/sick pay, expense reimbursements, hourly-employee validations, and benefits changes.
  • Review approved time inputs and work with Managers to address any time entry discrepancies.
  • Process Record of Employment (ROEs) within Service Canada requirements.
  • Ensure that all payroll entries in the Avanti system are fully documented.
  • Ensure payments are made accurately and timeously, provide payroll advice, file all related source documents, audit trails, and ensure that the general ledger is updated.
  • Complete year end processing and preparation of T4's.
  • Calculate, and process short term disability pay for approved disability claims.
  • Implement wage table changes as directed by policy, and Collective Agreements.
  • Administer and maintain the benefit program which includes providing employees with information about benefit coverage, processing enrolments, changes, and terminations as well as processes enrolment, leaves, disability leaves and terminations as well as annual reconciliation and report requirements to ensure compliance with the pension plan and share purchase plan.
  • Prepare and submit monthly and annual remittances and reports to government and other agencies (e.g. WCB, T4's, CRA, Union, benefit providers, Statistics Canada etc.).
  • Any other ad hoc duties as required.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Post-secondary education in in accounting, business, payroll, human resources, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of full cycle payroll experience using the Avanti system.
  • Experience in defined benefit pension programs and collective agreements.
  • Working experience with Avanti.
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, Employment Standards, taxation rules and year-end reporting processes
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner ( PCP ) is considered an asset.
  • Benefit Designation in either Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or Group Benefits Associate (GBA) is an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office applications such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint

  • Knowledge of accounting, payroll regulations and information systems issues to assure smooth interface between functions.
  • Excellent analytic, mathematical and organization skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform under time constraints.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution skills.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with all levels of staff and outside agencies.
