Thurber Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training Opportunity

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an entry-level or early career Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training to join our team in Edmonton, Alberta. Thurber is a specialized consulting firm with a focus on geotechnical engineering. Our project work includes transportation, large and small infrastructure, natural hazards, development, and more. We undertake challenging assignments that can include steep terrain, deep foundations, compressible soils, landslides, contamination, or other complications. As our Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

Responsibilities

Initial responsibilities:

  1. Providing construction inspection and quality control/assurance testing for various infrastructure and transportation projects;
  2. Conducting field compaction testing of soils;
  3. Carrying out field concrete testing as per CCIL/CSA requirements;
  4. Conducting pile construction monitoring for driven steel and cast-in-place concrete piles;
  5. Liaising with project engineers and client's site representatives; and,
  6. Traveling to construction sites throughout western Canada.

Subsequent Progressive Responsibilities:

  1. Managing geotechnical and construction materials testing projects;
  2. Conducting field drilling programs, construction monitoring, or instrumentation programs relating to geotechnical and materials projects;
  3. Preparing and writing proposals, fee estimates, and technical reports as directed by the Engineering or Branch Manager;
  4. Coordinating and conducting forensic and field investigation programs;
  5. Supervising the work of technologists and providing technical direction; and,
  6. Promoting and assisting Thurber in supporting the geotechnical practice, and managing client relationships, including business and new client development.
Qualifications and Assets

Bachelor's degree in a relevant civil or geological engineering program;
Master's degree in a directly related field, preferably geotechnical engineering, is an asset;
Previous relevant experience working within Western Canada is an asset;
Class 5 driver's license;
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
Able to work effectively individually and in a team;
Excellent verbal and written English communication skills;
Strong interpersonal skills;
Be comfortable driving mid to full-sized pickup trucks in urban, rural, and construction environments;
Be available for shift work to meet the changing scheduling demands of our clients;
Be able to lift 50lbs to chest height;
Be comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites;
Have strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing); and,
Be eligible for membership with APEGA.
