The Clean Technologies Team(CleanTech) at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) providesscientific expertise in the areas of clean technologies, chemical engineering,environmental science, and industrial microbiology, and delivers appliedresearch services to support regional, national and multinational companiesthat operate in the resource, energy, and clean technologies sectors.

The primary areas of researchfocus of CleanTech are the development of methods and technologies tocharacterize and add value to industrial residual materials, wastes, andby-products through the application of microbiology and chemical principles incollaboration with industrial partners. CleanTech operates as anindustry-driven, highly multidisciplinary applied research facility fullyintegrated with the Campus Alberta system.

The successful candidate for thisResearch Associate position will join a highly diverse, inclusive andsupportive team of research professionals with backgrounds in microbiology,chemical engineering, environmental science, and applied chemistry. The newteam member will have specialized expertise in analytical chemistry,conversions of biomass, particularly for soil application, and be anenthusiastic individual with a strong aptitude for teamwork and collaboration,comfort with failure, patience, eye for detail, tenacity, unshakable optimism,and keen sense of humor. This new team member will work on a portfolio ofmultidisciplinary projects in close collaboration with a consortium of industrypartners and other Applied Research Centres within NAIT.

KeyResponsibilities:

  • Developand conduct a variety of laboratory-based analyses of soils, soil amendments,biomass, etc. using a variety of analytical techniques and instruments
  • Conductresearch in the area of biomass conversion including using chemical, thermal,etc. approaches and conducting characterization of intermediates and products
  • Compileand interpret data including statistical analysis
  • Developinglab techniques and protocols
  • Reviewingand/or writing reports and proposals
  • Preparepresentations and communicate results and observations effectively betweenproject teams and industry partners as needed
  • Developand execute experimental plans with minimal oversight

Skills& Abilities:

  • Superiorinterpersonal and communication skills, ability to work independently withoutsupervision, work in a multidisciplinary team, and participate in team culture
  • Experienceperforming analysis of and characterizing biomass and soil samples in aresearch setting is essential; experience in industrial settings is a majorasset
  • Experiencewith liquid and gas chromatography, ICP-OES and ICP-MS, elemental analyzers,TOC, and BET analyzers is a major asset
  • Proficientwith Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledgeis advanced statistics is an asset
  • Experiencein experimental design and method optimization
  • Experiencewith proposal writing and preparing technical reports
  • Experiencewith bioinformatics is an asset

Qualifications:

  • PhD. or MSc.in Analytical Chemistry or a related field. A BSc. will be considered with 4 ormore years of directly related experience in a research lab
  • Minimumof 2 years of related laboratory work experience
  • Equivalenciesmay be considered

Remuneration : $71,098.04- $95,372.94 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification –Research Associate l).

Thisposition is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE)Collective Agreement.
