Scope

Are you looking for a job opportunity that has tremendous opportunity for growth and will make a direct impact in the community? We are currently hiring for an Engineering Technologist who will play a key role within our Transportation Division.

The Engineering Technologist role in the Traffic and Road Safety Engineering section that performs technical work related to managing the safe and efficient flow of multi-modal traffic throughout the City. Surrey has a population of nearly 600,000 and continues to grow by approximately 1000 people per month, leading to a rewarding and challenging transportation career with opportunities for growth within the Division.

Responsibilities
  1. Performing field inspections, undertaking technical assessments, and making recommendations related to signage and pavement markings, sightlines, road safety, traffic management, and ensuring compliance with permit conditions, in partnership with other City staff.
  2. Assisting with projects such as the development of specifications and standard drawings for signage and pavement markings.
  3. Analyzing and interpreting traffic data to define operating parameters.
  4. Interpreting and applying departmental regulations and city standards, including those of Land Development, Design and Construction, Utilities and Traffic Management, as well as external requirements.
  5. Formulating and reviewing traffic management plans.
  6. Corresponding and liaising with the public, other departments, senior levels of government, contractors and the development community regarding traffic-related enquiries or concerns and to coordinate construction and road activities to minimize traffic disruption and congestion.
  7. Providing direction and guidance to other staff on matters related to the work.
Qualifications

Completion of a one year certificate in a discipline of Engineering Technology relevant to the position from a recognized post-secondary institution with 3 years engineering experience with a demonstrated record of technical knowledge, skills and ability or an equivalent combination of related training and experience; OR Completion of a minimum 2-year diploma in a discipline of Engineering Technology relevant to the position from a recognized post-secondary institution with exposure to relevant engineering work. A valid BC Driver's License with a safe driving record. The ability to exercise independence and judgment within the framework of established guidelines while unusual problems or those requiring a change in policy are discussed within the team before action is taken.

The ability to effectively plan, prioritize and organize workload thereby meeting project scheduling and delivery requirements. The ability to deal effectively, including building and maintaining strong relationships, with a wide range of individuals and groups including the general public, the development community, internal staff, and external stakeholders such as private and government agencies. A knowledge and ability to operate computer equipment and software as applied to the work performed.
