Reporting to the Research Navigator-Leader in the Department of Evaluation and Research Services, the Patient Engagement Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating the patient engagement strategy for patient-oriented health research in Fraser Health with all Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) partners, including patients, researchers, clinicians, policy makers, decision-makers, other health organizations, provincial/territorial health authorities, academic institutions, patient not-for-profit organizations and the pharmaceutical sector. This position will be an expert in applying national and international standards for engaging patients at all levels of the patient engagement spectrum from inform, advise, consult, collaborate and empower. In addition, this position will be involved with patients and researchers in order to ensure that multidisciplinary research teams are trained in patient-oriented research. The Specialist will responsible for developing a public oriented strategy to maximize patient recruitment as research participants. As the local/regional contact for clients of the BC SUPPORT Unit Fraser Regional Centre who wish to engage in patient-oriented research, the specialist: # This includes developing, implementing and evaluating detailed 'implementation and stakeholder' engagement plans so that key performance and result indicators can be achieved. # Leads priority-setting processes for patient-oriented research using applicable national or international models. # Develops and/or implements standard operating procedures for patient engagement according to national and international standards in the Fraser Regional Centre. # Develop, implement and evaluate a public-oriented strategy to maximize the pool of available patients for recruitment as partners on patient-oriented research teams in partnership with various stakeholders, including Patient Voices Network, local health authority patient advisory councils, and local patient groups. # Provides team building support to SPOR partners for engaging in patient-orientated research by ensuring the roles and responsibilities of the participating patients are clearly defined and that the patients are reimbursed and compensated according to guidelines. # Mentors and consults with research teams and Department of Evaluation & Research Services (DERS) staff to develop patient-oriented research proposals that are aligned with external and internal funding requirements. # Develop training methods/tools and train patients, researchers, clinicians, decision makers and other stakeholders on how to conduct patient-oriented research with patient engagement. # Collaborates and develops partnerships within Fraser Health, Simon Fraser University and externally to develop a network of patients, researchers and decision makers interested in patient-oriented research. # In alignment with the stakeholder engagement plan, implement communication strategies by contributing to internal and external publications/meetings to continually build awareness about patient-oriented research in collaboration with Simon Fraser University partners. # Acts as the spokesperson for patient-oriented research at meetings, conferences, public forums, etc. # Develops and maintains applicable departmental research web page content to support the needs of all stakeholders. Baccalaureate Degree in a health science related field, plus five (5) years recent, related experience in program evaluation, community capacity building or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid BC Driver's License and access to a personal vehicle for business related purposes. Professional/Technical Capabilities: Knowledge and understanding of health research in Canada. Experience in the conduct of research. Knowledge and understanding of citizen/community engagement strategies and methods. Project management experience including planning, implementation, reporting, monitoring and evaluation. Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and online meeting software.
