Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Software Engineering, the Sr. Application Developer is primarily responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable and reliable software engineering solutions in a timebound agile manner. This role has the unique opportunity to dive into projects and deliverables spanning across all business units and functions across the enterprise. The roadmap includes a large-scale system modernization, business transformation work and a cloud adoption strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of Sagen's modernization strategy and support its' implementation. The scope of work includes replacement or modernization of core systems, with emphasis on simplicity and supportability. You have cross functional knowledge and the drive to dive into the details of how each business unit works.
  • Deliver software development projects according to the scope, schedule, quality, performance, and scalability expectations.
  • Participate in both the design and development of brand-new applications/microservices as well as the enhancement/re-architecture of existing components.
  • Participate in all stages of the SDLC within a Scaled Agile environment.
  • Coordinate work and effectively communicate with technical and business audience.
  • Reverse engineer existing applications independently, understand and document the requirements, supporting the re-design and modernization.
  • Enhance/re-architect existing components to satisfy new performance and scalability requirements.
  • Participate in secure development practices for all new development and security remediation projects for legacy code as required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor of science degree in computer science, computer engineering or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, ideally building large scale systems.
  • Experience building applications with web, mobile, or enterprise technology stack is a must.
  • 6+ years of excellent skills in Java (1.5 to latest version), Spring & Spring boot frameworks, JPA & Hibernate technologies, SOAP & REST APIs, Apache Camel, IBM MQs is required
  • 4+ years of coding with Oracle SQL, PL/SQL; strong skills in querying, SQL scripting with Oracle database is required.
  • Ability to transform the business requirements into technical tasks, implement them and document the solutions.
  • Strong grasp of algorithms and data structures and how to best apply them to build optimal software solutions.
  • Ability to review and decide on the right libraries to use and ensure no security risk is involved.
  • Understanding the Scaled Agile scrum planning and execution.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Preferred
    • Scrum Master certified
    • Hands on experience with front end technologies including HTML, CSS, Angular, Node, NPM, Typescript, Bootstrap frameworks
    • Hands on experience with Python or R language and data modelling
    • Hands on experience with NoSQL databases
    • Hands on experience with any cloud technologies, preferably with AWS & Azure
    • Hands on experience with Okta
    • Hands on experience with Jira, Confluence
  • Deep understanding and knowledge of Hybrid Cloud Solutions, SaaS technologies, Software-Defined Networks, Data Warehousing and Machine Learning.
  • Experience with reverse engineering and understanding legacy systems that may lack subject matter experts and proper documentation preferred – be able to quickly consume and understand both business workflow and technical implementation of business systems.
  • Experience with insurance systems and integrations (underwriting, claims, actuarial, finance) would be an asset.
