As the Print Technician 2, Digital Output Centre, you will provide support for the University's Digital Output Centre (DOC), which provides professional printing, scanning, vinyl cutting, and other production services to the university community on a fee-for-service basis. The Technician processes job orders, assists users, keeps detailed records, and troubleshoots files, systems, and equipment.

As the successful applicant, you should possess:

  • Two-year diploma in design, print production, or applied arts, plus up to two years of additional related specialized training.
  • Minimum three years' experience supporting digital file troubleshooting on MAC and PC platforms, digital print output, and scanning, in a production environment.
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Considerable experience using most current versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, and Excel.
  • Experience providing technical demonstrations to clients at various levels of technical expertise.
  • Exposure to a color-managed digital work environment and calibration software.
  • Experience working with raster image processing (RIP) and Imposition software.
  • Experience in maintaining PDF Filled Forms is an asset.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary setting is an asset.
  • Considerable operational knowledge of various output devices such as high-speed black & white and color laser printer/copiers, professional-quality ink jet printers, vinyl cutters, and binding equipment.
  • Ability to assess and resolve tier I software and equipment problems.
  • Understanding of scanning technology, terminology and applied practice using a variety of scanning devices.
  • Knowledge of color theory and digital color matching systems in the creation of profiles for both displays and media.
  • Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, prioritizing, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to individuals and groups of varied technical expertise.
  • Ability to work with considerable independence.
  • Ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced client-centered production environment.
  • Ability to lift 18 kilos (40 lbs).
  • Some knowledge of traditional photographic, printmaking, offset press, and other traditional image and type creation technologies desirable.

Typical Duties Include:

  • Checks and prepares client's files for output processing. Prints/outputs jobs following prescribed procedures, techniques and policies. Applies knowledge and experience to process technically difficult files or troubleshoot files that will produce unsatisfactory results for clients. Inspects and evaluates quality of produced jobs before delivery.
  • Assists clients in preparing files for output to various types of equipment. Provides standard step-by-step advice and assistance to clients based on recommended procedures and techniques. Advises on, and assists clients with, production methods which may result in reducing client costs.
  • Advises and assists clients in the creation of work order forms. Resolves any uncertainty arising from forms prior to creating invoices or outputting jobs. Creates invoices for clients by entering the data. Processes Cash Card and paid invoice transactions for clients. Maintains records of all transactions.
  • Provides both individual and group/class orientations to DOC services. Demonstrates the appropriate use of materials, tools, and equipment with a particular emphasis on safety. Provides step-by-step follow-up technical demonstrations on equipment to individual students. Supervises or monitors equipment for safe and appropriate usage.
  • Schedules new appointments, appointment changes and cancellations for clients. Accommodates walk-in clients and their needs. Assigns resources to clients in an effective and strategic manner.
  • Accurately maintains financial, inventory, and other records.
  • Troubleshoots systems and equipment as necessary. Consults the Print Technician 3 when systems and equipment errors cannot be corrected with routine maintenance or troubleshooting techniques.
  • Performs routine equipment maintenance as directed by the Print Technician 3.
  • Maintains the work environment for safety, efficiency, and cleanliness. Adheres to WHMIS and WCB regulations and follows the University's OH+S policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a professional, effective and amicable working relationship with students, staff, and faculty that promote a secure, comfortable, and productive learning/teaching environment.
  • Assists in the installation and configuration of systems and equipment. Assists in the creation of forms, reference material, and other departmental information. Provides input into operations.
  • Performs maintenance duties of the curriculum self-serve printers and release stations as required by the Print + Transactional Lead.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
