Job Description

CCI has an immediate opening for an Environmental Planner, Senior Range Ecologist whose primary focus will be to carry out vegetation surveys. We are looking for someone with direct experience in a similar role. Reporting to the Operations Manager, Regulatory and Environment, this position requires a self-motivated, safety conscious individual who takes great pride in their work. Location:
This position is a full-time role based out of our Cochrane or Calgary office starting immediately.

Accountabilities:
  1. Conduct vegetation surveys consisting of detailed baseline vegetation inventories, reclamation surveys, various rangeland inventories, forest harvest area layouts, silviculture and reforestation monitoring, rare plant surveys, and weed surveys;
  2. Identify grasses, shrubs, and forbs of Alberta's rangeland;
  3. Interpret AGRASID, Grassland Vegetation Inventory (GVI), or other digital vegetation inventory data;
  4. Classify range sites, ecological sites, and plant communities utilizing Alberta's Range Plant Community Guides and Ecological Site Guides;
  5. Conduct range, seeded pasture, and riparian health assessments;
  6. Prepare baseline inventory reports for conservation easements;
  7. Prepare grazing management plans and provide recommendations on grazing capacities and stocking rates based on vegetation communities;
  8. Compile, input, and analyze biophysical/range data;
  9. Work with CCI's Forestry Team assisting with field work in Alberta and British Columbia;
  10. Conduct or assist with wetland assessments, including boundary delineation, potential effects, and mitigation for construction implementation;

Manage various reclamation planning and fieldwork projects including conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Detailed Site Assessments, and Reclamation Certification Applications. Prepare seed mix recommendations for construction projects, environmental protection plans, and conduct other environmental planning duties. Conduct Post-construction Reclamation Assessments (PCRAs) on pipeline rights-of-way, post-construction vegetation assessments, and environmental as-built surveys. Prepare various reports as they relate to biophysical, range, reclamation, and other vegetation or post/pre-construction assessments. Mentor and train junior and intermediate staff. Liaise with clients, construction personnel, and regulators. Overnight out-of-town travel may be required for fieldwork, with potential for evening, weekend, and shift work. This position will require approximately 40% office and 60% fieldwork, dependent on the seasonal fieldwork. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  1. Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in agriculture, biology, environmental science, reclamation, or related field;
  2. Articling Agrologist or Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.);
  3. Significant experience conducting biophysical, range, and other vascular plant inventories;
  4. Knowledge of plant taxonomy and general range management principles and practices;
  5. Knowledge of reclamation practices, vegetation and soil assessment protocols, and Alberta reclamation regulations;
  6. Knowledge of the Alberta Wetland Classification System and associated surveys, applications, and reports;
Other Assets (Skills & Training):
  1. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills;
  2. Strong project management skills;
  3. Technical writing;
  4. Experience conducting or assisting with other biological surveys in both Alberta and BC;
  5. Experience using various software, including Word, Excel, ArcGIS, and Esri-based field and office products;
  6. Experience operating ATV, boat, and other field equipment;
  7. Valid Alberta Drivers License;
  8. Willing to provide Drivers Abstract;
  9. Must provide a Negative 13 panel Drug and Alcohol Test upon hire;
  10. Experience loading and towing trailers, and driving 4 x 4 trucks;
  11. Hold valid safety certifications including All-terrain (ATV) vehicle operator certification, H2S Alive, First Aid and CPR, WHMIS, PCST, CSTS, and other safety training courses required to work in Alberta.
