Job Summary

The Bridgetender is utilized to ensure continuous daily operations of the Victoria Bridge. The role is responsible for controlling traffic lane changes, traffics gates, coordinating lane changes with Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) and Seaway, and ensuring traffic safety by patrolling the bridge hourly and being the first responder in case of a traffic accident. Please note, this position is to replace other Bridgetenders who might be on vacations during the year.

Major Responsibilities

Monitor and direct traffic and provide assistance to users

Make required changes to traffic lanes for rush hour by placing and removing traffic cones, beacons, and gates

Ensure all vehicles protection (CN and others)

Initiate emergency procedures in case of accident (e.g., police, ambulance, and towing) and participate in road cleaning operations in case of accident

Operate all equipment, such as a loader and small power tools for daily tasks

Clear snow from the approaches to the Victoria Bridge and parking lots

Perform lawn maintenance along the approaches to the Victoria Bridge, buildings, and parking lots

Perform maintenance on buildings (inside and outside), such as replacing light bulbs, cleaning gatehouse windows and floors

Perform maintenance of all equipment and tools, mobile signaling equipment (e.g., replace batteries, lights)

Perform maintenance and clean vehicles, such as replacing batteries, wipers or tires

Complete vehicle documents

Act as the relief team when required

Support and oversee different work carried out by the CN Victoria Bridge Attendants and contractors

Working Conditions

The role is primarily performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions

The role is stationary and is limited to Victoria Bridge operations only

The incumbent has a variable schedule

Requirements

Must have a Driving License Class 5 issued by the SAAQ

Must be fluent in French and English

Must have the skills, knowledge, and physical capacity to operate all the equipment and tools, including a salter truck with a front plow, loader tractor and snow blower

Must be able to operate a tractor, a lawn mower, brush cutter and trimmer

Must be able to initiate the emergency procedure established following a situation where external needs are necessary (e.g., ambulance, police, firefighters, coast guard)

Must have knowledge of activities on the Victoria Bridge, including Seaway operations

Training

The incumbent is required to attend formal classroom training for CPR and first aid.

This position is a unionized position. As such, pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective agreement.
