POSITION DESCRIPTION

CUSTODIAN Title: Custodian

Reports to: Principal/Head Custodian/Superintendent of Business

Supervises: Not applicable

Location: As assigned Position Identification: School Support

Position Summary:

The Custodian is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the school building(s), grounds, equipment

and facilities and keeping it in a safe condition on a daily basis in such a manner that the needs of the

school programs can be effectively and efficiently maintained. This includes the security of all school

facilities.

Position Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Head Custodian, and Principal, and on occasion the Custodian may take direction from the Superintendent of Business or designate. The incumbent interacts with other staff members of the school, and on occasion the general public, salespersons, contractors/suppliers,

students and volunteers in order to supply or obtain routine information. On occasion the Custodian may have contact with the Police for security purposes.

The Custodian must have thorough knowledge of cleaning agents/materials, building supplies, cleaning

equipment, health and safety policies and procedures, fire safety and security procedures, and school

emergency plans. A good understanding of how to maintain and operate cleaning and mechanical equipment is required. The Custodian must have the ability to follow oral and written directions, be able

to multi-task, and organize work time effectively when required. Participation in training as the Board

may required from time to time. There may be occasions where the Custodian will have to show casual

custodians how to perform tasks. The Custodian must always work with safety in mind. The responsibilities for the position involve two distinct areas of work, that is, routine and non-routine work. The core responsibilities during routine work include:

1. Open the school: ensuring the school and the grounds are ready for occupancy at the beginning of the school day.

2. During the school day: ensuring the facilities are maintained in a safe and clean manner, inspect facilities, playground equipment, on a pre-determined schedule.

3. After dismissal: Facilities are cleaned on a pre-determined schedule. Community groups are

monitored, and buildings are secured. The core responsibilities for non-routine work include:

1. These responsibilities compliment the routine parts of the job in terms of heavier cleaning during the school breaks. Also included are jobs of an occasional nature, which address the needs of the School Board.

Position Duties:

During routine work, duties include:

1. Opening school duties include: a. Disarm security system.

b. Unlock doors. c. Flush water fountains.

d. Raise flag. e. Clean school on a pre-determined schedule.

f. During winter months, clear (snow blow or shovel) snow from entrances, pathways, sidewalks etc., sand and/or salt entrances as required.

g. During summer months, sweep entrances and sidewalks as needed.

h. Ensure heating systems are working and advise Head Custodian/Principal of any non-

operational equipment immediately.

2. Duties between opening and dismissal include: a. After classes commence, sweep and/or mop all hallways. b. Check all washrooms for paper, soap or spillage and replenish and/or clean the facilities

as required. c. Clean mirrors and all inside glass.

d. Clean and disinfect washrooms and fixtures, and wash floors in washrooms. e. Wipe down hallways of smudges and dust.

f. Change burnt out light bulbs.

g. Assist in the handling of supplies delivered to the schools. h. Cut and trim grass when and if required.

i. Inspect and remove paper, broken glass, etc. from school yard. j. Assist the Head Custodian with any maintenance.

k. Report any repairs that are required or conduct minor repairs to equipment as required. l. Change vacuum cleaner bags or empty vacuums. m. During noon hour bag and remove garbage from class rooms and clean up any spills

resulting from lunch.

n. Sweep or clean any debris or snow from entrances after each recess.

o. Any cleaning or maintenance that requires immediate attention. p. Clean all fixtures and keep store room clean and orderly at all times. q. Report or remove any safety hazards immediately.

r. Inspect fire extinguisher(s) on a monthly basis. s. Inspect Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on a monthly basis. t. Complete log books, digital logs or necessary paper work when required.

3. Student dismissal to closing duties include: a. Sweep/vacuum all classrooms, portables, hallways, entrances, change rooms and

storage rooms and ledges. b. Mop/wipe hallways and classrooms, clean and re-stock all washrooms.

c. Take down flag, clean portables, clean board office if required, close windows and empty

and take out trash. d. Buff or wash and wax hallways on a pre-determined schedule.

e. Monitor community use groups to ensure proper use of facility.

f. Secure all entrances and turn off all lights, except security lights.

g. Set security alarm.

h. Other related duties as assigned by the Principal, Head Custodian or Superintendent of Business or designate.

During non-routine work, duties include:

4. Clean air filters in boiler room, classrooms and mechanical rooms.

5. Set up chairs in gymnasium for use by the school and general public.

6. Set up tables and chairs for school functions. 7. Set up and take down stage if applicable. 8. Wash walls, windows, ceilings, lights, furniture, floors, desk, blinds, white boards/Smart Boards

during the summer, Christmas and March breaks, on a pre-determined schedule. 9. Dust and wash office furniture.

10. Wash classroom sinks. 11. Wash and wax classroom floors on a pre-determined schedule. 12. Paint interior walls and ceilings, and clean carpets when and if required.

13. Clean Board office (wash walls, windows, blinds, desks, vacuum and clean carpets) if applicable.

14. Respond to security alarm calls when required. 15. Other related duties as required by the Principal, Head Custodian or Superintendent of Business

or designate.

Working Conditions:

The Custodian works indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to inclement weather. The incumbent is continuously exposed, to dust, dirt, fumes, odours, noise or wetness. Duties performed throughout the

day/time of year require various levels of activity such as medium activity of long duration and/or heavy activity of intermediate duration. Safety is a key issue in the work of a Custodian, all tasks performed must be done so with the utmost of care in order to ensure the safety of themselves and others.

Qualifications:

• Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.

• Six (6) months to one (1) year previous custodial, janitorial, cleaning or related experience.

• Ability to perform custodial duties in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

• Physical ability to perform essential job duties, including lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling and operating cleaning equipment.

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

• Ability to work independently or as part of a custodial team.
