Job Description
Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, the Director of Engineering is responsible for strategically managing, maintaining, and optimizing the organization's physical assets and infrastructure to ensure they operate efficiently, safely, and align with the company's goals. This involves supporting VP of Operation by providing reports and data from the area of their expertise, overseeing day to day building operations, managing budgets and capital projects, expanding preventive maintenance programs, ensuring safety compliance, and leading Engineering team to support organizational priorities.
1. Building Maintenance
- Oversee all building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, automation, lighting).
- Develop and implement engineering and maintenance policies and procedures.
- Coordinate repairs, preventative maintenance, and ensure compliance with statutory and safety requirements.
- Supervise and mentor Building Operators to ensure smooth facility operations and optimal guest experience.
- Manage communication with tenants, landlords, and partners; oversee leases and contracts.
2. Project Management
- Lead multiple capital and special projects from planning to completion, ensuring adherence to budget, schedule, and safety standards.
- Manage contractors, review site plans, and resolve construction issues.
- Prepare RFPs, negotiate contracts, and oversee project documentation.
- Track project milestones, budgets, and expenses; oversee procurement of materials and equipment.
- Develop and manage operational, capital, and energy budgets.
- Identify and implement cost effective, sustainable solutions.
- Lead long term engineering strategy and capital planning.
3. Compliance and Safety
- Ensure compliance with all codes, regulations, and safety standards.
- Support and participate in the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
- Maintain and enforce safety policies and procedures; stay current with industry best practices.
4. Client Care / Event Management
- Collaborate with client facing teams to meet event and operational needs.
- Maintain quality assurance and continuous improvement programs.
- Address client feedback and attend meetings as required.
5. Required Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of experience in a similar role, preferably with a convention centre or similar large public gathering facility.
- Previous experience in managing large elevator and escalator service contracts.
- Understanding of the deep lake water cooling system (Enwave or similar district heating and cooling plant).
- Understanding of high and low pressure steam systems.
- Proven expertise in building systems including but not limited to HVAC, MEP, life safety, and energy management.
- Deep understanding of Ontario Occupational Health & Safety, Building, and Fire codes.
- Knowledge of energy efficiency and sustainability practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong budgetary, projections, and cost control skills.
- Creative and efficient in solving complex, time critical problems.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, coach and motivate people.
- Possesses sharp ability for attention to detail, working efficiently and flexibly.
- Driven, self motivated, and capable of managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
