Under the direct supervision of the Transition House Executive Director, the Outreach & Community Engagement Worker is responsible for developing and providing services and programs to women who have experienced family violence and engage the community through education and events and building relationships. This will be accomplished by providing services and programs to clients in the community that promote healthy relationships within Cumberland County, attend or create community events to promote our programs and services and the importance of building and sustaining healthy relationships, and to build community relationships that promote inclusivity in services.

This position will be working in the Parrsboro area of Cumberland County.

Typical Duties

1. Provides support to clients in the community who are victims of violence and to ex-residents of Transition Houses who are in need of on-going support in person, in the community, over the phone and/or via digital platforms;

2. Work in cooperation and coordination with Women's Support Counsellors at Autumn House, and Program Facilitators at Lilac Place: Resources for Women.

3. Develop support groups and programming for women who have experienced abuse;

4. Supports abused women and children to access community services (medical, legal, educational, C.E.I.C., child protection, etc.;

5. Submits monthly statistical report on activities to the Executive Director, record all client and/or community interactions daily, and update HIFIS with statistical data;

6. Develops and delivers public education programs aimed at preventing family violence;

7. Court accompaniments, EPO applications, High Risk designations and follow ups;

8. Other duties related to the needs of the women and Transition House Operations.

Knowledge/Special Skills Required

The Outreach & Community Engagement Worker must possess a basic knowledge concerning the dynamics, causes and treatment of violence as it relates to women, children and perpetrators.
A working knowledge of community resources (i.e. medical, social, legal, therapeutic, educational, employment) available to assist victims and perpetrators of violence is essential.
Some knowledge of legislation and government policies, which relate to violence against women and children.
Knowledge and skill in working with communities and groups is essential.
Ability to work with the public through media and public awareness campaigns would be useful.
Effective record keeping and writing skills are essential.
Familiar with Transition House philosophy and services.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, education or Equivalent-Combination of training and experience.
Valid Nova Scotia driver's license.

Type and Level of Supervision Exercised

The Outreach Worker will be required to supervise her own practice to a large extent while receiving program and administrative direction from the Transition House Executive Director.

Physical and Mental Demands

Must be capable of working in crisis situations. Must be capable of exercising good judgement and to demonstrate self-confidence in performing the job. Capable of working independently and showing initiative. Able to take and give direction and perform the role without close supervision.
