Unit Summary

The McMaster University Medical Centre site of the Hamilton Health Sciences is home to McMaster Children's Hospital. The McMaster Pediatric Emergency Department provides care for infants, children and youth 17 years of age and under. We are the level one trauma facility for patients under 16 years of age, the Form 1 Psychiatric Facility in the Region and see 52, 000 pediatric Emergency visits per year. Our dedicated team of health professionals provides family centred emergency care that embraces teaching, research and health promotion.

Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the Emergency Department at McMaster Children's Hospital will provide leadership and promote excellence in pediatric family centered nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. The NP will work within a multidisciplinary team in an academic Emergency Department. The NP will be an active member of the frontline staff, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient and family centered model of care to provide direct patient care, coordination of care, discharge planning, and the coordination of related community, and other resources for patients. The NP will tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings. The NP will work in partnership with various sub-specialists, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education.

Days, evening, weekends.

This position is temporary until October 10, 2026

Qualifications

1. Current Certificate of Registration in the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse Extended Class RN(EC)
2. Completion of a Master's Degree in Nursing, with an Advanced Practice Nurse Certificate in Pediatrics, (NPPediatrics)
3. Minimum of 4-6 years recent pediatric nursing experience
4. Minimum of 3 years recent acute/primary clinical experience in pediatrics
5. Proficiency in performing history and examination of the infant, toddler, child and adolescent
6. Knowledge and assessment of developmental milestones at all stages of pediatric development and ability to access appropriate community or hospital-based resources in setting of developmental delays
7. Ability to counsel and educate parents and children in the Emergency Department environment
8. Knowledge of community resources
9. Able to handle significant daily psychological and emotional stress in dealing with parents of critically or chronically ill children
10. Experience in the development and maintenance of medical directives
11. Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem solving, organization and prioritization
12. Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
13. Demonstrated ability to work in a consultative role with the members of the multidisciplinary team
14. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations
15. Knowledge and experience in change theory and pediatric learning principles
16. Demonstrated ability to utilize information technology
17. Membership in the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) and other professional organizations relevant to the role
18. Current BCLS
19. Certification in PALS and relevant certificates recommended
20. Committed to acquire new knowledge and ensure competency
21. Eligible for cross appointment with McMaster University School of Nursing at the undergraduate and graduate level
