Our challenge
We are looking for a skilled and technically proficient Accessibility Testing Specialist to lead accessibility auditing and remediation efforts across digital platforms. This role will focus on ensuring full compliance with the Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA) and WCAG 2.1 Level AA, leveraging Deque's Axe suite of tools-including Axe DevTools, Axe Monitor, and Axe Auditor.
Additional Information
The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors. In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Halifax, NS is CAD $90K - CAD $100K/year & benefits (see below).
The Role
Responsibilities:
Accessibility Auditing & Compliance
- Conduct comprehensive accessibility audits using Deque's Axe Monitor to scan and monitor large-scale web environments for ongoing compliance.
- Perform manual and automated accessibility testing for web applications, mobile platforms, and digital content.
- Use tools such as Axe DevTools, Axe Auditor, and browser extensions to identify WCAG 2.1 violations.
- Simulate assistive technology experiences using JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack, and keyboard-only navigation.
Issue Documentation & Remediation
- Create detailed, actionable accessibility defect reports through Axe Monitor's dashboard, and integrate findings into JIRA or Azure DevOps workflows.
- Provide technical guidance to development teams on implementing accessible code (ARIA roles, semantic HTML, alt text, keyboard handling, etc.).
- Collaborate with designers and content authors to ensure inclusive UX and accessible content authoring practices.
Testing & Development Lifecycle Integration
- Integrate Axe CLI and Axe DevTools API into CI/CD pipelines to enable continuous accessibility testing.
- Conduct regression testing for accessibility after new deployments or updates.
- Partner with QA and developers to embed accessibility checks into Agile development sprints.
Policy & Compliance Oversight
- Ensure all digital assets are in compliance with the Accessibility Standard for Information and Communication under the AMA.
- Assist in maintaining compliance records and producing reports for regulatory or internal auditing purposes.
- Recommend and contribute to the development of internal accessibility policies and digital inclusion standards.
Requirements:
- 3+ years of experience in accessibility testing and digital inclusion.
- Strong understanding of WCAG 2.1, Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA), and other related regulations.
- Hands-on experience with Deque's Axe Monitor, DevTools, Auditor, and CLI tools.
- Proficiency with assistive technology (AT) testing tools and methods.
- Technical familiarity with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, ARIA, React/Angular/Vue frameworks.
- Experience with automated accessibility scans, issue triage, and remediation in large web applications.
Preferred skills:
- IAAP Certification (CPACC, WAS, or CPWA) or equivalent.
- Experience integrating accessibility testing tools in CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab, Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
- Experience working with government or public sector digital accessibility standards.
- Knowledge of PDF accessibility and document tagging standards.
